Lyon, France

One of St. Lawrence University’s newest programs is in Lyon, France! This partner program will be operated through Université Catholique de Lyon located in eastern France. There are two academic tracks students can participate in based on their French language skills. Take classes in subjects such as science, language, law, economics, social sciences, and theology and religious sciences. Students will take these courses on the Université Catholique de Lyon's campus with other visiting USAC students. Students have access to all university services including librariers, sport facilities, cafeterias, health facilties and more. The program provides field trips to the French Alps, Bourgogne, Marseille, the Mediterranean Sea, Strasbourg, the Alsace Region, and more!

Location

Lyon is the third-largest city in France with an abundance of UNESCO World Heritage site! The city is full of rich history regarding Roman heritage, the Renaissance, the French Revolution, and more! Located between the Rhône and the Saône rivers, this scenic landscape makes for the perfect setting for a nice bike ride or walk. Widely recognized for their cuisine, explore local restaurants and markets to immerse yourself in Lyons culinary heritage.

Academics

Any level of French speaker is eligible to participate through one of two tracks. The first is the Intensive French Language Option (IFL) where French language and culture is the main focus. The second is the Multidisciplinary Studies in English Option (MSE) that requires one French language and other electives in English.   1. Intensive French Language and Culture
    • 2.5 units of French language at the appropriate level 
    • 2 Elective courses (French or English) 
  2. Multidisciplinary Studies (English Option) 
    • French at the appropriate level 
    • Intercultural Communication 
      • This required course is intended to enrich the students’ understanding of the social and cultural contexts encountered as participants on this program. 
    • 3 elective courses in either English or French 

Elective course are offered in both French and English and change depending on the semester. Both tracks can take courses in either French or English.

Housing

Students live in single rooms with Lyon Catholic University in the Allix student housing. St. Lawrence will provide a monthly food stipend to cover the cost of preparing food independently. The St. Lawrence program does not cover the costs of meals during vacation periods.

The  Fall semester typically begins in late August and ends in mid December while the Spring semester typically begins in early/mid-January and ends in late early May.

Orientation

Pre-departure: The CIIS office organizes in-depth orientation sessions on-campus prior to the students' participation in the program. This includes a program specific session(s) in which the students will learn more about the program, local culture, academic expectations, and any other important information. There is also an orientation session led by the CIIS office on culture shock as well as safety and security while abroad.

On-site: USAC will provide an intensive orientation process to help students acclimatize to their new city and cohort program.
