Getting To and From St. Lawrence

Directions from major regional cities:

  • Albany: I-87 (Northway) to Exit 23 (Warrensburg)l Rt. 28 to Blue Mountain Lake; Rt. 30 to Tupper Lake; Rt. 3 West to Rt. 56; Rt. 68 to Canton. (3.5 hours away)
  • Burlington, Vermont: I-89 north to Exit 17, Route 2; follow signs to Grand Isle Ferry (daily, year-round); upon exiting ferry, Route 314 to I-87 south; I-87 south one exit to Exit 38; Route 374 west to Chateaugay; Route 11 south to Malone; Route 11B to Potsdam; Route 11 to Canton. (3 hours away)

I-89 north Swanton; Route 78 to Route 2 to Rouses Point, N.Y.; Route 11 south to Malone; Route 11B to Potsdam; Route 11 to Canton. (3 hours away)

  • Syracuse: I-81 North to Exit 48A; Rt. 781 to Rt. 11; North on Rt. 11 to Canton. (2.5 hours away)
  • Utica: Rt. 12 North to Lowville; Rt. 26 North to Rt. 11 North; Rt. 11 North to Canton. (3 hours away)
  • Boston: I-90 to Albany; to I-87; follow directions from Albany. (6.5 hours away)
  • Montréal**: Rts 20/401 to Cornwall, Ont.; bridge to USA; West on Rt. 37 to Massena; South on Rt. 56 to Potsdam; South on Rt. 11 to Canton. (2.5 hours away)
  • Ottawa**: Rt. 416 South, follow signs for Bridge to USA, turn right onto Route 37 West, follow signs to Rt. 68 East, Rt. 68 merges with Route 11 in Canton, drive about one mile from intersection of Routes 68 and 11 to the University’s Romoda Drive entrance. (90 minutes away)

International Airports

Our close proximity to Canada offers additional opportunities. Please note you will need to cross an international border to get to campus. Border delays could extend the amount of time it takes you to get to your travel destination so please give yourself extra time. Subject to the U.S./Canadian Border being open.

Adirondack Trailways serves the Canton and surrounding North Country communities. The Canton bus stop is a short distance from campus. 

There are two Adirondack Trailways bus runs daily between Canton and Syracuse; bus and train connections can be made there, and the buses also make stops at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport terminal. 

Adirondack Trailways also offers one round trip a day between Canton and New York City via Albany.

VIA Rail:

During the academic year, we will help current students get to and from the airport, bus station, or train depot so they can travel more easily to their destinations.

Leave the driving to us during breaks! We work with a private bus company to charter buses to and from several Northeast destinations for current students during academic breaks including Mid-semester Break (fall semester), Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, Mid-semester Break (spring semester), and Spring Break. Reservations are strongly encouraged.

Please note: Canton, New York, is located 20 miles from the U.S.-Canadian border. We strongly recommend that non-U.S. citizens who do not have permanent resident status and who plan to travel to or visit St. Lawrence have their passport, visa, and other immigration paperwork with them at all times.

Campus Parking

St. Lawrence is a walking campus. This aligns with our community’s commitment to the environment and also ensures Laurentians feel safe walking from place to place.

New/Current Students

Students are welcome to bring vehicles to campus for the academic year. If you do, you will need to register your vehicle with Safety and Security. You will be assigned a parking lot based on where you live on campus.

Campus Visitors

Please register at the Department of Safety and Security (GPS: 76 Park Street, Canton, NY 13617; the department entrance is in the back of the building).

You will be directed to proper parking areas upon registration.
