Digital Scholarship

At St. Lawrence, digital scholarship is about exploring how technology and creativity work together to tell stories, share ideas, and inspire discovery.

Digital Scholarship with a Liberal Arts Edge

Learn By Doing

You’ll work alongside mentors who are as curious as you are while using digital tools that bring your projects to life. You’ll get hands-on experience with digital and 360° cameras, AI tools, photo and video editing software, podcast recording and audio mixing equipment, and basic web design programs.

Open to Every Major

Digital scholarship welcomes every student, regardless of major or experience level. You’ll find ways to connect technology with your interests and passions. You might look at art through data, history through maps, or science through storytelling.

A Launch Pad for What Comes Next

You'll have the freedom to explore any topic that inspires you while learning to think digitally about your work. You’ll build creative, analytical, and technical skills to use technology to strengthen your ideas. Whether you’re studying psychology, environmental studies, English, or business, you’ll graduate ready to apply digital skills to any career path you choose.

How to Get Involved in Digital Scholarship

Digital Fellow: Sophomore Seminar

As part of the Sophomore Success Initiative, our one-year fellowship/workshop series, hands-on course introduces you to the digital tools and creative workflows used across today’s media and technology fields. You’ll discover what it takes to move an idea from concept to finished product, whether that’s a short film, a website, or a multimedia story.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Use cameras for photography and video
  • Record and edit audio in our on-campus podcast studio
  • Explore web design and digital storytelling
  • Experiment with AI, video editing, sound design, and more

Digital Assistant

After completing your Sophomore Seminar, you can stay involved as a Digital Assistant, a paid position where you help mentor new students and grow your own expertise.

You’ll continue learning alongside faculty mentors while gaining real experience in areas that interest you most, such as video production, editing, documentary filmmaking, or digital storytelling.

Recent examples:

  • Podcasting for Philosophy of American Education
  • Digital storytelling with students studying abroad in Costa Rica
  • Environmental Psychology projects using data and design

Workshops

Digital Scholarship doesn’t just live in one program; it connects across campus. Faculty and mentors host workshops that blend digital tools with topics from every field.

Recent examples:

  • Podcasting for Philosophy of American Education
  • Digital storytelling with students studying abroad in Costa Rica
  • Environmental Psychology projects using data and design

Senior Seminar

In your senior year, you’ll take what you’ve learned to the next level. Working in small teams, you'll collaborate on creative digital projects. For example, students recently created branding work for local organizations or campus initiatives.

You’ll also complete an independent capstone project, where you can explore your own digital interests, showcase your skills, and reflect on how your liberal arts education connects to the digital world.

Independent Study

Some students take their digital curiosity even further through independent study, where you'll work one-on-one with a faculty mentor to explore a topic of your interest.

For example, Nela Chestojanov '27 used a 360° camera, virtual reality, and AI to create an interactive digital world based on St. Lawrence’s campus. Her project explored how people emotionally respond to different spaces, combining psychology, technology, and art in one immersive experience.
