The annual contest is sponsored each year by St. Lawrence's Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics, together with the University's Pi Mu Epsilon Honorary Chapter, the national mathematics honorary society.
Winners who later decide to attend St. Lawrence are eligible to receive the Robert G. Cromie scholarship. This scholarship is named after a former math faculty member and is awarded to the top senior, while other scholarships are available for the top three non-seniors.
Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to the top three overall scorers on the individual portion of the exam. The contest also recognizes the top scorer on each team as well as the top three teams.
Each team's score depends on the top three scorers from  each school in addition to the points earned in the team portion of the exam.

High schools in St. Lawrence County are invited to attend this annual event and each school has the opportunity to bring teams with up to five students.
Students take an individual exam then work together in teams on a set of math problems.
St. Lawrence University students who are members of the Pi Mu Epsilon Honorary proctor and help grade the exams, then the results are announced when teams return from having dinner at the University's Dana Dining Center.
