Major/Minor Combinations in Math, CS and Stats

Major/Minor Combinations

Some students decide to pursue a combination of the majors and minors offered by this department. Due to the connections between our disciplines, some of the courses we offer can be counted towards more than one. For some combinations, to ensure that students develop a sufficient depth of knowledge within each field, there are limitations on double-counting (see below).

A few combinations are not permitted. By its very nature, Data Science is a combination of Statistics and Computer Science; further combinations with those two disciplines have too much redundancy. Therefore, a student with a major or minor in Data Science may not also major or minor in Statistics or Computer Science. Through their elective choices, students may tailor the Data Science major more towards Statistics or more towards Computer Science. Students who want deeper backgrounds in both disciplines may wish to consider a double major in Statistics and Computer Science instead.

One last note to students planning combinations of studies within our department: although we love having you here, we encourage you not to miss the opportunity to explore the rest of the St. Lawrence curriculum as well. By university policy, no student may take more than 14 units within any one discipline. This reflects the goals of a liberal arts education, which include breadth as well as depth.

Combining Statistics and Math

  • Students wishing to major in both Math and Statistics need to meet the requirements for both and can only double count Math 135, Math 136, Math 205, and Math 217. This worksheet can help you plan the combination.
