Returning Students
Important 2024-2025 FAFSA Update:
This year due to significant changes to the FAFSA, and delays from the Department of Education, we are extending the filing deadline for current students. The application is available now and if you have not already filed, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible. We will not be able to prepare your aid detail for next year until we have received your application results.
If you have filed, but need to make a correction to the application, we are aware that you cannot do so at this time. The ability to make corrections will be available in the first half of April. We will send an update to students and parents as soon as the Department of Education begins allowing updates to be processed.
Should you have any questions, please contact our office.
Important Renewal Instructions for 2024-2025
Applying for financial aid is an annual process. There are many factors used in calculating eligibility for financial aid. For example, a student who does not qualify one year might become eligible during the next year. The opposite is also true. Changes in family financial circumstances might affect your eligibility for need-based student aid each year. The 2024-2025 continuing student renewal instructions are outlined below.
Before completing your 2024-2025 FAFSA, please be sure the student and all contributors have created their Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID, if they do not already have an ID. FSA IDs can be created here.
To apply for need-based financial aid from St. Lawrence University and the Federal government, including St. Lawrence University Grants, Federal Pell and Supplemental Opportunity Grants, Direct Loans, and work-study, you will need to begin the process by submitting the on-line Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). There is no charge for submitting this form.
COMPLETE THE ONLINE 2024-2025 RENEWAL FAFSA (FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID):
Students apply on-line (https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa). Continuing students should submit the FAFSA beginning December 31, 2023 and no later than April 1, 2024 for priority financial aid packaging. St. Lawrence's school code is 002829.
Late financial aid applicants risk losing eligibility for part or all of their financial aid resources. Should you feel that you have special circumstances that will not allow you to meet the financial aid application deadline; you must request an extension by April 1, 2024. Extension requests may be sent to finaid@stlawu.edu or by calling 800-355-0863.
It is important to submit accurate and complete student and parent information.
NEW YORK RESIDENTS
Families must continue to be residents of New York State (NYS) for consideration of the NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). The TAP application process begins by filing the FAFSA and listing a college or university located in New York State. Students may complete their TAP application online at https://www.tap.hesc.ny.gov/totw/.
- Note that NYS TAP award estimates provided on 2024-2025 award notifications will be based on the current year formula until the NYS budget is in-place.
- St. Lawrence University will not be responsible for making up any difference should one's actual TAP award be lower than the estimated amount.
VERMONT RESIDENTS
Do not forget to submit your application to VSAC (Vermont Student Assistance Corp.) for consideration for a state grant. It is your responsibility to contact VSAC (888-307-8722 or online) to be certain you comply with the VSAC application deadline.
SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES
If you feel that you have any unusual circumstances not included in the FAFSA, please forward a separate letter directly to the Financial Aid Office.
AID ELIGIBILITY NOTIFICATION
We will use online Self-Service (APR2) for financial aid award notifications, which supports our sustainability efforts. Notification will be sent on a rolling basis beginning in late June.
BILLS
Bills for the fall semester will be available online in mid-July. The balance on your account (cost minus applicable aid) for the fall semester is due August 15th. Spring billing statements are expected to be available online in December, and payment is due January 15th. Additional billing information, including details about the time payment plan may be found at the Student Financial Services website.
OTHER DOCUMENTS
Please do not submit any documents (other than the FAFSA form) unless we specifically request them from you. Those selected for verification will receive an email (to your SLU email account) from the Financial Aid Office requesting supporting documents.
In addition, if your FAFSA results indicate that your parents are separated or divorced, we may require the submission of financial information from your non-custodial parent. You will be contacted if this information is required.
