The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), was implemented in 1999 to measure the level of engagement of first year students and seniors in order to improve student learning.
The survey instrument has undergone significant updates in 2013. Major revisions include changes in items to better reflect learning in the 21st century, wording changes, and the addition of topical modules.
As a result, also the analysis has changed:
Formally, results were summarized along 5 dimensions or BENCHMARKS (level of academic challenge, active & collaborative learning, student-faculty interactions, enriching educational experiences, and supportive campus environment.)
Now, results are presented in the form of 10 ENGAGEMENT INDICATORS (Higher-order learning, Reflective & integrative learning, Learning strategies, Quantitative reasoning, Collaborative learning, Discussions with diverse others, Student-faculty interaction, Effective teaching practices, Quality of interactions, Supportive environment) and 5 HIGH IMPACT PRACTICES (Learning communities, Service-learning, Research with a faculty member, Internship or field experience, Study abroad, Culminating senior experience) .
