New to Student Accessibility Services

New to SAS

Getting Started

To register with Student Accessibility Services (SAS) for accommodations, students need to follow the steps below. Students should first initiate this process by submitting our Application for Accommodations packet.

Step 1: Register a Request for Accommodations

Complete and submit our Registration for Accommodation form. Please be advised that inadequate and/or incomplete answers may delay the eligibility review process. Please contact Student Accessibility Services if you are having any trouble accessing the forms.

Please note: Accommodations are not retroactive.

While completing this application, you will be asked to attach documentation which verifies your need for our services through a diagnosis. If you are not able to submit the documentation at the time of filling out your application, please send a follow up email with your documentation attached to studentaccessiblity@stlawu.edu

Step 2: Documentation

Students requesting academic accommodations and/or services must submit documentation of a disabling condition to verify eligibility. Students are required to submit documentation regarding the diagnosis/diagnoses that demonstrates a disability covered under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 as amended (2008).

Please review our Documentation Guidelines for additional information. All documentation is kept confidential.

Additional forms of documentation may include:

  • Disability Verification Form--filled out by healthcare or treatment providers
  • A letter from a qualified medical professional
  • Psychological evaluation(s)
  • Psychoeducational evaluation(s)
  • IEP or 504 Plan
  • A physician's medical record

Step 3: Schedule an Access Meeting

Once your Registration Form has been submitted, you will be asked to schedule an Access Meeting (AM) with the the staff. Appointments can be made via a secure Bookings link for each staff member. Virtual and in-person meetings are available.

Students who work with Student Accessibility Services may be unsure of what to expect when they meet with staff in the office.

Here are a few things to know before you attend your meeting:

  • Your Access Meeting (AM) is your chance to share your experience with your disability and the impact it may have on your educational experiences.
  • You will have a chance to explain how your disability impacts all aspects of your academics and what barriers you may face in class, during exams and quizzes, in your residential setting and how it may affect the out-of-classroom activities required of your program.
  • During the AM, you may be asked what you think would be most helpful to address the barriers you have described. It is okay to say you are not sure. We can brainstorm what might be helpful and what resources may be available to you on campus.
  • If you have received accommodations in the past (at another college or in high school), share what has or has not worked in the past.
  • In your AM we will discuss accommodations and explore different support options that are available to you at St. Lawrence University. You will receive an email message regarding accommodation decisions within 3-5 business days.  Once an accommodation decision is received, you will need to follow the steps in the message to activate any approved accommodations.

Step 4: How to Activate Approved Academic Accommodations

Students must activate their accommodations each semester, so professors are notified of their approved accommodations. For returning students, accommodations do not renew automatically. Students must activate accommodations each semester if they intend to use them in their coursework. Accommodations do not apply retroactively, and as such it is important to notify professors at the start of each semester.

a. You will receive an email from Student Accessibility Services after accommodations are approved or at the start of each semester that instructs you to activate your accommodations.

b. Once you receive the “Action Required for Accommodation Plan,” message, use the link to access and fill out the Student Services Agreement.  Please wait until you receive the email for the current semester before filling out the Student Services Agreement.

c. After you complete the Student Services Agreement, you and your professors will receive an email message that includes your Accommodation Plan.

d. If you do not receive this message within 24 hours, please contact studentaccessibility@stlawu.edu.

Step 5: Accommodation Plan Notification

The Accommodation Plan explains the accommodations the student will need and any other pertinent information the faculty may need to be aware of to ensure the accommodations are met. Once students know that their professors have received the Accommodation Plan, they are responsible for contacting their professors to discuss the implementation of their accommodations relative to the design, nature, and intended learning objectives of the individual course in which they are enrolled. Students are encouraged to set up an appointment with their professors or going to their office hours.

Instructors are not required to provide accommodations until they receive the Accommodation Plan. Accommodations are not retroactive.
