Housing and Dining Accommodations
Student Accessibility Services and Residential Life work collaboratively to support students with disabilities or temporary medical conditions to implement housing and dining accommodations. To register with Student Accessibility Services for housing and dining accommodations, students follow the below steps.
Students should initiate the process by applying for accommodations and documentation as early as possible. For general questions about the registration process, an Information Session may be scheduled by contacting (315) 229-5537 or studentaccessibility@stlawu.edu.
Students who require housing or dining accommodations due to a physical, psychological, or other health/medical disability may request these accommodations through the Student Accessibility Services (SAS) Office. The University has established procedures to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to housing and dining at St. Lawrence University.
Procedures:
Step 1: Prior to requesting a housing accommodation, you must complete and submit the General Housing form through St. Lawrence University's Office of Residential Life Returning students must complete the online Housing Contract in the Residence Portal and must not have a financial hold.
Step 2: Complete and submit the online SAS Housing Accommodation Registration Form *
*Make sure to indicate which accommodations you are applying for on the Registration Form
Step 3: Submit documentation of disability from a qualified provider regarding your housing request. SLU Documentation Guidelines will help your provider draft a letter with the required information. The Disability Verification Form is another form of documentation that may help your healthcare provider provider us with verification of your disability and impacts in the residential setting. Page 5 of the form is pertinent to housing and dining.
Additional Questions to For Healthcare Providers to Consider
The student is requesting accommodations due to a disability. Please describe the functional limitations they experience that impact their ability to use and enjoy University-owned housing.
What symptoms impact the student’s ability to use and enjoy University-owned housing?
What are the triggers of the symptoms?
What is the frequency of the symptoms?
How long do the symptoms persist once they begin?
Please describe how severe the symptoms are.
Accommodations are granted if necessary to afford the individual the same opportunity as others to use and enjoy their housing. Please explain how the requested accommodation(s) are necessary to afford the student the same opportunity as others to use and enjoy University-owned housing.
Step 4: Schedule and attend a Housing Access Meeting with a SAS staff member. Appointments can be made through staff Bookings link. Housing Access Meetings can be held virtually or in person.
Step 5: After the Housing Access Meeting your request will go to the Housing/Dining Accommodation Review Committee* where your self-report and documentation will be reviewed for current symptoms and limitations, the severity of the condition or disability, potential alternative accommodations, and the necessity and fundamental nature of the requested accommodations.
*The Committee meets monthly. Students will receive notification of the Committee's decision from SAS via email within 7-10 business days following the Committee's meeting.
Step 6: Students approved for housing accommodations will receive a housing assignment based on those accommodations and availability.
Please note that housing assignments are binding for the applicable housing period. After room assignments have been made, students requesting room changes to another location due to a disability-related concern must contact SAS to request a new accommodation. If new requests for accommodations are approved, SAS will notify Residence Life of the new accommodations granted, and room changes will be subject to housing availability. Students requesting a room change to another location for circumstances unrelated to a disability must contact Residence Life.
Important Dates to Consider
June 10th: First Year and New Transfer students must submit their requests for disability housing accommodations.
March 9th: Continuing/returning students must submit their requests for disability housing accommodations. If you are a returning student and wish to continue using your housing accommodation the following academic year, you must let SAS know by completing the SAS Housing Accommodation Registration Form and indicating the you wish to RENEW your housing accommodation(s) for the next academic year.
