12 – 5 p.m. | Current States of Being: Exploring AI's Influence on Memory, Identity, and Creativity
Richard F. Brush Art Gallery, Griffiths Arts Center
Artificial intelligence weaves its way through our daily lives, entangling technology, memory, and cultural identity in both visible and unseen ways. Current States of Being brings together works by three artists: Danielle Ezzo, Ameera Kawash, and Eryk Salvaggio. Each artist critically engages with AI as both a tool and a subject, unraveling its biases, possibilities, and entanglements with history. The exhibition invites us to consider AI not as an impartial tool but as a collaborator, a disruptor, and a reflection of our own cultural and technological landscapes, unraveling and reweaving what it means to create in an era of algorithmic imagination.
*This is an ongoing exhibition available to view during the gallery open hours.
12 – 5 p.m. | A Culture Is Not A Costume
Richard F. Brush Art Gallery, Griffiths Arts Center
Cultural appropriation occurs when people take elements from a culture that is not their own and use them without understanding or respecting the elements’ original meaning. For many Native Americans, the appropriation of sacred symbols and the propagation of stereotypes have become all-too-common recurrences in sports, film, media, advertising, and toys. However, such iterations are not accurate representations of living, breathing cultures and are instead a reminder of historic oppression at the hands of colonizers. A Culture Is Not A Costume is based on Understanding the Differences Between Cultural Appropriation and Cultural Appreciation, a traveling exhibition organized by the Akwesasne Cultural Center located twenty-five miles from Canton. Selected artworks from St. Lawrence University’s permanent collection are also included in the exhibition.
*This is an ongoing exhibition available to view during the gallery open hours.
