We are proud to recognize the Environmental Studies students who presented their work at this year’s Festival of Science, Scholarship, and Creativity!
In celebration of Arbor Day, members of the St. Lawrence University community gathered at the Environmental Studies (ENVS) Living Laboratory for an afternoon of hands-on environmental action. Hosted by the Tree Campus Committee, the annual tree planting event continues to promote sustainability and foster a deeper appreciation for trees and the role they play in our campus ecosystem.
St. Lawrence recently joined the EcoLeague, a consortium of liberal arts colleges and universities dedicated to ecologically focused education and research as well as modeling sustainability through their operations and facilities.
Did you know there is a tree for every student on St. Lawrence University’s campus? And that roughly 48 acres of campus are designated no-mow zones to allow for a thriving ecology? And that, just last year, the University planted 89 additional trees around campus?

Associate Professor of Environmental Studies Sara Ashpole is passionate about field-based learning, connecting students to real-world environmental challenges while inspiring critical thinking and meaningful action for a sustainable future. Her research expertise includes local collaborations with landowners to monitor frogs and salamanders and restore endangered amphibian habitats, as well as policy work through her leadership on national and international conservation committees.
This semester, students in the Taming Trash course, taught by Dr. Lori Clark explored waste management through hands-on experiences. The class visited the St. Lawrence compost site, the Cornell Cooperative Extension Anaerobic Digester, and the Development Authority of the North Country Materials Management Facility.
St. Lawrence University has been recognized for its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, earning a place in The Princeton Review's 2025 edition of its Guide to Green Colleges.
In this edition, we spotlight faculty’s innovative use of prediction markets to enhance civic engagement in political science classrooms, the historical intricacies of Chinese cultural diplomacy, how ineffective corruption control in Europe has fueled the rise of populist movements, and much more.
On September 20th, the St. Lawrence University community came together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Environmental Studies (ENVS) Department.
