Modern Band

The previous incarnation of this ensemble, the Improv Lab, was launched at St. Lawrence University by Tim Savage in Fall 2007.  The intention was to create a workshop-type environment which fostered a collaborative, performance-based experience.  Each iteration since then has taken on its own shape and flavor.  

In Fall 2025, with a hand from Matt Gayle, the ensemble moved toward a Modern Band format. "Modern Band" refers to an inclusive ensemble setting that teaches students to play, perform, improvise, and compose using popular genres like rock, pop, rap, R&B, Latin, country, and more! Open to vocalists and instrumentalists of all kinds, Modern Bands are fully immersive experiences that empower students to take ownership of their ensemble from day one. Band members choose the music they play and are encouraged to make creative decisions about how tunes are arranged and performed to help the group forge meaningful, personal connections to every song. 

Rehearsals (starting Monday, January 19)

Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:30-6pm, in the Launders Underground (Noble Center 001)

Auditions

• none needed

For the first rehearsal, plan to share a song you would like to pursue with the ensemble this semester via YouTube, Spotify, or some other form of media. Bring a notebook and pencil to retain useful information as we venture forth.
