Improv Lab/Modern Band

The Improv Lab was launched at St. Lawrence University in Fall 2007 to create a workshop-type environment which fosters a collaborative, performance-based experience.  Each iteration since then has taken on its own shape and flavor.

Beginning in Fall 2025, with a hand from Matt Gayle, the ensemble will move toward a Modern Band format. "Modern Band" refers to an inclusive ensemble setting that teaches students to play, perform, improvise, and compose using popular genres like rock, pop, rap, R&B, Latin, country, and more! Open to vocalists and instrumentalists of all kinds, Modern Bands are fully immersive experiences that empower students to take ownership of their ensemble from day one. Band members choose the music they play and are encouraged to make creative decisions about how tunes are arranged and performed to help the group forge meaningful, personal connections to every song.
