Things to consider regarding HCC "committee" letters

Health Career Committee (HCC) letters are written based upon a student's HCC interview and materials.

  • Students can use a variety of letters of recommendations for health professional school applications.  This includes a committee letter (that which results from an HCC interview) or individual letters (usually one person writing a full page recommendation).  For some programs, there is a distinct disadvantage to not submitting a committee letter (medical school and dental school).

  • The purpose of the HCC committee letter is to capture the student's undergraduate academic and extracurricular experiences.  The letter is NOT updated with post-SLU graduation work experiences or activities.

  • SLU has articulation agreements with several institutions that REQUIRE an HCC committee letter: Clarkson PA & PT programs, early admission to the University of Rochester accelerated nursing program, 3+4 pharmacy agreement with University of Buffalo, University of New England College of Osteopathic medicine (DO program).

  • Some programs appreciate but do not require committee letters, while other programs prefer or require individual letters from science faculty.

  • Students should discuss with their pre-health advisor the best plan for recommendation letters based upon their particular career goals.
