Dana Professor of Mathematics, exploring the story behind Math Cats — the internationally-translated book that uses humor, art, and cats to communicate mathematical ideas to a broad audience. Dr. Look will discuss the origins of the project, its goals as a work of mathematical communication, and the collaborative process behind its creation. The session will also include stories from making the book, including some unexpected successes, a few things that did not go according to plan, and what happens when mathematicians try to collaborate with cats.
Building from the themes behind Math Cats, the talk will also highlight several of the department’s broader outreach and community-building efforts designed to help more people feel that mathematics belongs to them. These include the long-running High School Math Competition, the Math & Everything program for North Country high school students, and on-campus community events such as the Piathlon and Q-Club.
Dr. Look will also bring custom paw-print stamps of his feline “co-authors,” created in SLU’s Explore Lab Makerspace, allowing the cats to “sign” copies of Math Cats.
