Declaring the Major

Students wishing to declare a major in environmental science may do so by completing the following steps.

  1. Examine the Environmental Science Major Requirements and the Pathways and decide on a pathway that most aligns with your interests.
  2. Choose two academic advisors: one academic advisor should be from BIOL, CHEM, GEOL, PHYS, or STAT while the other academic advisor should be from ESS (Environmental Studies and Sciences). Suggested advisors for each pathway can be found at each of the pathway pages: Changing Landscapes, Ecosystem Sciences, Energy, Environmental Analytics, Environmental Chemistry, and Environmental Science and Policy. However, note that your academic advisors can certainly be faculty members involved in the environmental science program who is not on your specific pathway's list.
  3. Meet with each of your academic advisors to discuss your interests, your course plan, and other relevant items (e.g., do you plan on studying abroad?).
  4. Fill out the major declaration form on Slate by "Adding a Major" (not "Adding an Advisor"). The form will prompt you for the name of your major advisor and for you to select the major pathway that most closely aligns with your interest. There is also a space on the form to put a second advisor. Note that you can change your pathway as your interests develop. If you do this, you should let your advisors know, but you do not need to fill out the major declaration form again.
