Environmental Science

The Environmental Science (ENSCI) major at St. Lawrence University provides students with a rigorous, interdisciplinary foundation in the natural sciences for studying the complex relationships between humans and the environment. Drawing on biology, chemistry, data science and statistics, geology, physics, and environmental studies, the major emphasizes both breadth and depth across scientific disciplines.

Learning Goals for an Environmental Science Major

  1. Scientific Foundations and Inquiry
Develop a strong breadth and depth of knowledge across the natural sciences (biology, geology, chemistry, physics) and apply the scientific method to investigate and address environmental challenges.
  2. Data Analysis and Quantitative Skills
Utilize mathematical, statistical, and computational tools to collect, analyze, and interpret environmental data for evidence-based decision-making.
  3. Systems-Based Critical Thinking
Students will analyze environmental challenges through a systems perspective, recognizing feedbacks and interactions within and between Earth and human systems, and addressing scientific uncertainties and ethical considerations.
  4. Research and Communication
Students will cultivate skills in collaboration, leadership, and problem-solving, and apply their scientific training through experiential learning, internships, or research to prepare for professional careers or advanced study in environmental science.
  5. Professional Development and Application
Develop independent research, collaboration, leadership, and problem-solving skills through experiential learning, internships, and projects to prepare for careers or advanced study in environmental fields.
