- Sophomore Success Initiative
The Public Speaking Contest is an opportunity for students to show off their verbal communication abilities with the possibility of earning a cash prize. Participants will give extemporaneous speeches from any class on any topic, demonstrating that communication skills are essential across disciplines.
Nearly 140 first-year and sophomore students attended events hosted by the First-Year Program, Sophomore Success Initiative, and Academic Advising in recognition of earning a 3.75 GPA or higher during the Fall 2022 semester.
At St. Lawrence, faculty, staff, and alumni use a common refrain when talking with current students about preparing for a rewarding career—“it’s never too early to start.” The Sophomore Career Boot Camp, offered through the Career Connections office, is just one initiative that supports this philosophy.
Founded in 2016, the Sophomore Success Initiative empowers students to see their second year as an opportunity, not a slump. Students who participate create their own paths by exploring academic passions and investigating career interests.
“Sometimes we discount youth, when really they have powerful thoughts and awesome ideas,” says Jessica Sierk, assistant professor of education at St. Lawrence. “Our youth can be change agents in our community.”
