Dr. Brezault published a book chapter in French titled “In Search of a New Ecopoetic Consciousness of Place: Afrofuturist Performances of the Kongo Astronauts” in the volume Littératures africaines et écologie edited by Karthala. Drawing on the work of Achille Mbembe and Xavier Garnier, the chapter examines Afrofuturist ecological narratives in the performances of the Congolese collective Kongo Astronauts and in the music videos of Belgo-Congolese artist Baloji. It argues that their work resists what Rob Nixon calls “slow violence,” using art to challenge the objectification of African bodies and to critique the extractive economies shaping eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
