High School Students Experience a Day of College Language Learning at St. Lawrence
On Monday, November 2, St. Lawrence University welcomed nearly 50 high school students and their Spanish and French teachers for Spanish/French Immersion Day. The visitors came from four local schools: Potsdam Central School, Brushton-Moira Central School, Franklin Academy, and Brasher Falls Central School.
The day gave students a firsthand look at college life. They joined real university language classes alongside St. Lawrence students. Spanish students attended Elementary and Intermediate Spanish with Professors Marcella Salvi and Rafael Castillo Bejarano. French students attended Intermediate French with Professor Eloise Brezault.
In Spanish class, the visitors took part in a Día de los Muertos activity. They learned about the traditions behind the holiday and worked in mixed groups with St. Lawrence students to build an ofrenda in Spanish. The timing was ideal: the celebration falls on November 1–2.
Students also toured campus, had lunch at Dana, and heard from Jonathan Kent, Vice President for Enrollment Management & Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, about the college experience at St. Lawrence.
