Anti-AAAPI (Asian, Asian American, Pacific Islander) violence is rising in the U.S., and hate has no place in our community.
- According to the Pew Research Center survey, three in 10 Asian Americans (31%) report having experienced racial slurs or racist jokes since the beginning of the pandemic.
- Between March 19, 2020, and February 29, 2021, the Stop AAPI Hate national reporting center received 3,795 reports of anti-AAAPI bias and hate. Incidents were reported from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
- 68% of the incidents were reported by women.
- These incidents ranged from online harassment to civil rights violations, such as workplace discrimination and being barred from transportation, to verbal harassment, shunning, and physical assault (which made up 11.1% of the reported incidents).
- Verbal harassment and shunning were the most common forms of bias/discrimination and made up 68.1% of the reports.
- The largest percentage of incidents occurred in businesses and in public places; 2.5% of the incidents occurred at universities.
- As of February 28th, 503 reports had been made in 2021.
- The rise in anti-AAAPI bias/discrimination is connected with the covid-19 pandemic. Media reports using derogatory language against Asians and people of Asian descent and postings by politicians on social media platforms have exacerbated the situation.
What can we do?
- Be an ally. Show support for our Asian and Asian American friends, classmates, and coworkers. Condemn acts of hatred and bias when you see them - don’t ignore them.
