Hadwen Guide Training Outdoor Climbing Skills Progression

The Hadwen guide climbing skills progression starts with ODST: Advanced topics of Outdoor Leadership and Education.  Acceptance into this course is by instructor permission only. Once accepted into the course the student is then asked to consider a skills emphasis: water, skiing, or climbing. The climbing progression is for those that choose to engage in vertical environments. The progression is actually a number of field experiences that teaches the fundamental concepts and standard principles that are the foundation of rock climbing. The progression is presented as the application of technical, environmental, and organizational skills required to mitigate a safe passage in vertical environments. Skill wise the progression is as follows:

• Top rope setup and site management – Mid semester and Spring breaks winter term
• Anchor building/ Gear Placement – Mid semester and Spring break winter term
• Learning to Lead – Instructor permission only
• Multi-pitch Climbing – Fall semesters
• AMGA SPI Course – Right after senior week – spring term
