Wilderness First Responder Certification

Wilderness First Responder (can be taken for 1 credit as ODLS:250):
This 8-day intensive medical training course prepares students to respond to and manage emergencies in a wilderness setting. Priority for this course is given to students taking Advanced Topics in Outdoor Leadership (ODLS-251) but remaining seats are open to students looking to gain this experience for personal backcountry trips or for those looking to work in an outdoor setting. Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a Wilderness First Responder certification through SOLO. Dates for 2026: January 8-13 & 24-25.

  • $700 for SLU students plus $215 for early arrival room & board
  • $750 for SLU fac/staff or community members 

Wilderness First Aid 
This 2-day training and certification covers the basic skills needed to assess and respond to emergency situations that arise in the backcountry. Dates for 2026: January 17-18. 

  • $250 for SLU students
  • $275 for SLU fac/staff or community members
