Anti-Hazing Policy & Prevention Programs
Anti-Hazing Policy & Prevention Programs
St. Lawrence University has at its core the values of Listen, Respect, and Engage. St. Lawrence University does not tolerate hazing and is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct, Section 4, Proscribed Conduct. If you have been a victim or hazing or have knowledge related to hazing incidents, we highly encourage you to file a report. All reports will be investigated to the fullest extent possible.
Hazing is defined as: “Conduct that intentionally or recklessly causes psychological, emotional or physical harm, or could cause such harm, to a person as part of initiation into or affiliation with any organization. Anyone who actively participates in such conduct, or who has knowledge that such conduct is taking place or is about to take place and fails to report it to University officials or otherwise take appropriate and reasonable steps to attempt to stop such conduct, is guilty of hazing.” (St. Lawrence University Student Handbook)

Please know that this is specifically an internal process related to St. Lawrence University. Students and impacted people are always encouraged to file reports with local or state authorities.
Prevention and Awareness
St. Lawrence University is committed to ongoing prevention and awareness programs related to hazing. Starting in Summer 2025, a hazing prevention working group meets to discuss and organize campus prevention and education efforts. This working group is committed to comprehensive programming that reaches every St. Lawrence student as we recognize that hazing behaviors may not be isolated to certain populations (athletics, Greek membership). We have a thriving theme and club/organization culture and want to emphasize the negative impacts of hazing.
Currently, mandatory programming is delivered to our athletes and leaders of our Greek chapters. We look to expand this education to our themes and organizations. Comprehensively, this program will emphasize ethical leadership, positive culture and experiences, positive team building, skill building for bystander interventions, and the importance of reporting and membership accountability.
