David "Dave" Smithers

Dear Laurentian Community,

I write today to share the sad news that David “Dave” Smithers ’82, a longtime member of St. Lawrence University’s Facilities Operations team, passed away on April 12.

Dave began his career at St. Lawrence in 1985 in Dining Services, working in a variety of kitchen roles before joining Facilities Operations in 1988. He remained in that role for more than three decades, retiring in 2024. Over the years, Dave worked in several residence halls, including Lee Hall, Rebert, and Sykes, where he became a familiar presence to students and colleagues alike.

Dave was known for his quiet and reserved nature, as well as his kindness and dedication to his work. Colleagues remember his daily bicycle rides to campus—no matter the weather—as a constant part of his routine.

He found joy in spending time with his cats and was a longtime supporter of the Potsdam Humane Society. In his free time, Dave could often be found building detailed model ships and aircraft and always had a strong knowledge of their history. He was also known for his love of music and his enthusiasm for the Los Angeles Rams.

Dave is survived by his sister, Kimberly Johnson, and her family, with whom he enjoyed spending holidays at their home in Gouverneur.

Please join us in honoring Dave’s life by sharing your memories of him on the St. Lawrence University website. You can read the remembrances of others here.

Sincerely,

Kate Morris
