The English department offers majors and minors that allow students to take literature and writing courses in a variety of combinations. The department also offers a combined major with Environmental Studies. The English major consists of four introductory courses, the research methods course, advanced courses in five distinctive studies areas, and a Senior-Year Seminar. First-year students interested in majoring in English are encouraged to take any course at the 100, 200, or 3000 level, except ENG 250: Methods of Critical Analysis, which is the research methods course. See the available courses listed below. Students are advised to complete the introductory level of the major during their first two years. A unit of credit toward graduation is given for a test score of 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement test in English Language/Composition. A unit of credit is also given for a score of 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement test in English Literature/Composition.
