Community Gospel Choir

Our Mission

The Gospel Choir was founded in the fall semester of 2002 under the leadership of Margaret Kent Bass, Kathleen Buckley and Barry Torres. The choir began with a handful of committed SLU students. Though we were officially founded in 2002, Board Trustee, Sharee Freeman ’76 shared that there was a small Gospel Choir at SLU when she was a student in the 1970s. Today, we are a volunteer, non-auditioned community Gospel Choir. The Gospel Choir and Gospel Band provide music for the monthly Chapel Service. We are a multi-cultural, multi-racial and multi-faith Gospel Choir. Our membership is open to students, faculty, staff and persons from the community. As an inclusive, welcoming and diverse community, we sing contemporary and traditional gospel songs, spirituals, hymns, and traditional congregational songs that speak of unity, hope, love and reconciliation. No experience is necessary; however, a willing spirit is required! Membership remains open throughout the academic year.

The Community Gospel Choir along with our Gospel Band provides music for the Chapel Service every first Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in Gunnison Chapel (when school is in session).
