Adjusting to College
Starting college is a big transition. It's exciting, but it can also feel stressful, overwhelming, or lonely at times. These feelings are common. Most of your peers will experience challenges, too.
Why Adjustment Matters: The sooner you feel adjusted to this new environment, the sooner you'll be able to fully enjoy your experience. Remember that you are not alone and support is available. Using the strategies and mindsets below can help.
Expect Some Ups and Downs
Everyone's college experience is different. You may enjoy your classes but miss home, or feel socially connected while finding academics more challenging. Avoid comparing your experience to others. It's normal to face setbacks and take time to adjust.
Stay Connected
Keeping in touch with family and friends can help you feel supported, but it's also important to make space for new relationships and experiences. Communicating clear expectations for when you'll be in touch, like a regular phone date, can help.
Put Yourself Out There
Avoid staying in your room. Go to meals with others in your building, attend events, sign up for a club or Outdoor Program trip, or join a volunteer experience, like making the weekly Campus Kitchens meal. It may feel scary, but remember that everyone is trying to meet new people.
Prioritize Your Well-Being
Taking care of yourself can make a big difference during times of change. Try to:
- Get enough sleep
- Eat regular, nutritious meals
- Stay physically active
- Make time for healthy stress management, such as exercising, journaling, listening to music, spending time outdoors, or practicing mindfulness
