Academic Stress

College is an exciting time filled with opportunities to learn, grow, and build your future. It can also bring significant academic pressure. Academic stress is common, but it doesn't have to define your college experience.

Why Managing Stress Matters: While some stress can motivate you to stay focused and meet your goals, persistent or overwhelming academic stress can make it harder to concentrate, retain information, stay organized, and feel confident. It can also contribute to burnout, decreased motivation, and reduced enjoyment of the college experience. The good news is that academic stress is manageable. Check out the tips below.

  • Prioritize sleep. Pulling an all-nighter can hurt both your academic performance and your well-being.
  • Plan ahead. Break large assignments and exam preparation into smaller, manageable tasks to reduce stress and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  • Find balance. Make time for friends and activities you enjoy while staying on top of your academic responsibilities.
  • Fuel your body. Eat regular, nutritious meals and stay hydrated to help maintain your energy and focus. Your brain needs fuel to function at its best!
  • Practice healthy coping strategies. Feeling stressed is common, particularly at the end of the semester. Take breaks to exercise, get outside in nature, connect with friends, or attend wellness events. You can also reach out to your Community Assistant (CA) or Thrive Mentor (TM) for support and to find upcoming events.
  • Remember: you are more than your grades. Do your best, celebrate your efforts, and know that one assignment or exam does not define your worth.
  • Use campus resources. If you're struggling with time management, study skills, or coursework, Academic Advising is available to help.
