In Memory: Duane Clookey

Dear Laurentian community,

In sadness, I write to share the news that Duane Clookey passed away on May 25th, 2022. He was 67.

With humor and a truly dedicated work ethic, Duane connected Laurentians on campus for 42 years. He started in the University’s mail room, then worked for more than three decades on the grounds crew before retiring in 2016.

Born in 1954, he grew up in Chase Mills, NY and graduated from Madrid-Waddington Central School in 1972.

Duane loved taking care of people, places, and pets. His wit and charm were sources of laughter and comfort. He was the epitome of a North Country hockey dad. Neither cold nor blizzards would keep him from his kids’ games. He found great satisfaction in mowing, planting trees and shrubs, and splitting firewood. His love of animals ensured that his door was always open to the family dogs.

He is survived by many beloved family members. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his name to the Potsdam Humane Society or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

As we mourn the loss of our friend and colleague, we are grateful to Duane for his service to St. Lawrence and our community. Those who worked closely with him recall Duane’s sense of humor and his ease bringing people together.

Please join us in celebrating Duane’s life by sharing your memories of him on the St. Lawrence University website. You can read the remembrances of others here.

 Sincerely,

Kate Morris
