Memories of Laura O'Shaughnessy P’92

I met Laura in the late 80’s in Vilas Hall. Absolutely the cream of the crop. A beautiful human inside and out. I’m so sorry to hear of her passing, the world will miss her deeply.

Laura was one of my favorite people at SLU. Although I lost touch with her after her retirement, I have always fondly remembered her. She was unpretentious and a wonderful mentor. When I was first starting out at SLU she really was a role model I could look up to. Besides her excellent teaching and scholarship, it was her deep sense of morality that really inspired me. She was an academic but she always saw what she did as a teacher and a person had an ethical purpose--to make the world better. But let's not forget--she was personable, good to talk to, she represented to me what was best about SLU and the teaching profession! I will miss her---her very presence in this world shows to me at least that we can hope for a better world.

Laura was a dear friend and a mentor in my early years at St. Lawrence. We often shared about teaching and about our spiritual journeys. Though we stayed in touch, I have missed her presence on campus since she retired. I still miss her wisdom, good sense, and good humor.

Like many others, I honor the memory of one of the kindest people I've ever known. Her compassion for students, fellow faculty, and staff, served to model the best attributes of Laurentians. In her many roles, she thought critically and acted humanely. The recognition she received after retirement was both well-deserved and reflected a fraction of the respect she earned from everyone who knew her. I am deeply saddened to know she has passed but deeply grateful to have been her colleague.
