Memories of John & Dotty Hall

I didn't really ever know John or Dotty closely but was impressed at Dotty's trumpet playing in the Potsdam Community Band as well as in the SUNY Potsdam Campus Community Band. So many diverse talents she held! Sending best wishes to the family after this deeply-felt loss.

I didn't know John well, but I got to know Dotty as I helped her with her book on the history of SLU women's athletics through the implementation of Title IX. She was passionate about her topic, comfortable admitting she didn't know much about book production, willing to ask questions (and just the right ones), quick to learn. She showed me how one can achieve one's goals -- in her case, perhaps obviously, the installation and growth of women's athletics at St. Lawrence -- while being determined but also patient and cordial, thereby earning respect. We talked at length about a second book, from Title IX to the present, but regrettably it never came to be.

I took one of my masters classes with John right before he retired and appreciated his insight into teaching and coaching. First met Dotty when I was an assistant coach and then often ran into both of them a few times a year. Always both very kind and generous people. Dotty came into my SSES class 10 or 15 years ago to talk about the book she published about women's sport history at St. Lawrence. She made a good portion of that history to be sure!
