Catherine "Kay" Peggs

Dear Laurentian Community,

I write today to share the sad news that Catherine “Kay” Peggs, who served St. Lawrence University for 38 years in the business office, passed away on March 10 at the age of 102.

A lifelong resident of Canton, Kay joined the University in 1948 and remained a dedicated member of the St. Lawrence community until her retirement in 1986. During her many years on campus, she played an important role supporting the work of the University. Kay was known as a great friend to many, and colleagues remember her warmly for her love of St. Lawrence men’s hockey and the connections she maintained with players long after her retirement. Some of them visited her often—even for her 100th birthday celebration.

Born on February 8, 1924, Kay graduated from Canton Central High School in 1941, and began her career at the Queensboro Milk Plant in Gouverneur before coming to St. Lawrence. She was a lifetime communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Canton.

Kay was predeceased by her husbands, John J. Toomey and Richard J. Peggs, as well as her siblings. She is survived by several nieces, nephews, stepchildren, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Please join us in honoring Kay’s life by sharing your memories of her on the St. Lawrence University website. You can read the remembrances of others here.

Sincerely,
Kate Morris
