Bill Russell

Dear Laurentian Community,

I write today to share the sad news that Bill Russell, who dedicated 43 years of service to St. Lawrence University, passed away on March 15 at the age of 78.

Bill was a longtime and familiar presence on campus, contributing to the daily life of the University over more than four decades before his retirement in 2015. His commitment to St. Lawrence reflected a strong work ethic and deep connection to the community as he served in a wide range of capacities, including as security officer, computer technician, and cleaner.

Born on September 26, 1947, in Roanoke, Virginia, Bill graduated from Homer Central School and went on to earn degrees in Business Administration and Criminal Justice from Canton ATC. In addition to his work at St. Lawrence, he served his community in many ways, including as a member for more than 50 years of the Canton Fire Department and Rescue Squad. He even helped save the Gunnison Chapel from the fire that broke out in the bell tower in October 2013.  Bill also served as a fire instructor, EVOC instructor, and member of the St. Lawrence County HazMat Team. Outside of work, he enjoyed attending auctions with his wife, Sandy, hunting, collecting trains, and spending time with their cats, Malibu, Lucky, and Monica.

Bill is survived by his wife, Sandra; his sons, Robert and Steven; his sister, Jean; as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family.

Please join us in honoring Bill’s life by sharing your memories of him on the St. Lawrence University website. You can read the remembrances of others here.

Sincerely,
Kate Morris
