MINUTES OF ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY SAFETY COMMITTEE/

ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON CAMPUS SECURITY HELD VIA ZOOM

ON FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 2024, STARTING AT 800 A.M.

Chairperson:    Patrick Gagnon, Co-Chair called meeting to order at 0802

Present: Nick Ormasen, Co-Chair, Marcus Sherburne, Stacie Olney-LaPierre, Mary Charleston, Alana Belkevich, Susan Johnson, Secretary, Bob Hance, Suna Stone, Sharmela Garcia-Martin, Ethan Townsend, Marsha Sawyer and Aidan Gallagher 

Apologies: Dean Manley, Stacy Vassar, Jim Kozsan, Tim Kinch, Steve Richards, Bill Ritchie, Kasarian Dane (on Sabbatical) and Tara Tent

New Business:

  • Pat announced that Dean Manley will be moving on to a position with the Department of Environmental Conservation and he will be working with Human Resources on Dean’s replacement.
  • Golfcart operations –
    • Reminder to golfcart operators, sidewalks are for pedestrians, not golfcarts.
    • The golfcart training policy was updated in 2017 to shift the responsibility of training to the operator’s supervisor.
    • In the beginning of the Fall 2024 semester, a link will be sent out to the campus community with the policy and training expectations for golfcart operators.
  • The Safety Committee meetings will continue to be the first Friday of the month starting in October from 8:00-9:00 a.m.: 10/4/2024, 11/1/2024, 12/6/2024, 2/7/2025, 3/7/2025, 4/4/2025, 5/2/2025 and 6/6/2025. Meeting locations to be determined.
  • Suna brought up a concern from Kevin Angstadt – the wheelchair access between Bewkes and JHS has no door opener. She asked that Facilities be in contact with Kevin directly for more information.
  • Suna also brought up concern of soft spots on the track, inside lanes 1 & 2. Marcus to check it out and contact the track company.
  • Pat discussed the bookstore incident; there was no connection between the individual and St. Lawrence; he is getting some care now and a ban letter was issued to him on June 6, 2024.
