Finance Major Learning Goals

The finance major is designed to fill the following learning goals:

  1. Knowledge of fundamental concepts and tools of finance
    Demonstrate the ability to acquire, evaluate and communicate information through an understanding of the time value of money, risk-expected return tradeoffs and capital budgeting. 
     
  2. Ability to apply knowledge of fundamental concepts and tools of finance to perform financial analysis: 
    Demonstrate an ability to reason quantitatively and logically through conducting capital budgeting, asset pricing, and analysis of data to assess portfolio performance. 
     
  3. Critical thinking:
    Demonstrate an ability analyze and resolve complex problems in applying broadly defined financial management tools and techniques to the strategic decisions faced by for-profit, not-for profit, governmental and non-governmental organizations.
     
  4. Effective communication: 
    Demonstrate an ability speak and write clearly, articulately and persuasively through the production of professional quality financial documents, reports, and presentations. 
     
  5. Ethics: 
    Demonstrate an ability to integrate knowledge from multiple perspectives to recognize, evaluate and weigh the moral and ethical questions inherent in the allocation of resources across competing uses.
