    Professor Emerita in Global Studies Dr. Eve Stoddard was the keynote speaker at this year's CIIS Annual Lecture and discussed the partnership between academic study on-campus and intercultural learning off-campus, and the importance of critical self-reflection before, during, and after off-campus study.

    Saints Qualify for NCAAs, Earn Liberty League Accolades

    After competing in the Atlantic Regional, several members of the Saints Track and Field teams are headed to NCAA DIII Championship meets later this week. During the regional meet last week, Timothy Boyce '25 won the 800, breaking a St. Lawrence record while Emma Palumbo '25, Kathleen Merchant '22, and Katherine Sheehy '23 beat their personal bests in their respective events. The Scarlet and Brown stacked up accolades as three Saints earned Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Region honors while several members of the men's and women's tennis and rowing, and baseball teams earned All-Liberty League Honors. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com

    What’s at Stake: Alumni, Faculty Publish Research on Climate Change and Winter Sports in the North Country

    Winter in the North Country is synonymous with outdoor activities like pond hockey and cross country skiing. In a collaborative research article recently published in The Adirondack Journal of Environmental Studies, two faculty members and three St. Lawrence alumni explore how carbon emissions and climate change could affect these cold-weather traditions.

    Women's Basketball Continues Unbeaten Streak

    In a battle of the last two teams undefeated in Liberty League conference play, Saints Women's Basketball defeated Vassar 99-81 on the road on Saturday to improve to 10-0. Men’s Basketball secured a 68-61win over Bard on Friday after kicking off the new year with a 67-60 victory over Elmira.  Last week, several winter sports schedules were adjusted due to health and COVID-19 safety protocols. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

    Students recently spent two weeks exploring the past, present, and future of Europe and the European Union (EU).     Saints Make Canada's National Selection Camp, Season Tickets Now Available

    Members of the women's ice hockey team Julia Gosling '23 and Abby Hustler '25 received invitations to join Canada’s National Women’s Program camp. During the 11-day camp, the pair will vye for spots on Canada’s National Women’s Team, Canada’s National Women’s Development Team, and Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team.     Chemistry department hosted the 14th Annual Undergraduate and Graduate Chemistry Research Symposium

    On April 20, 2024, St. Lawrence University and the SLU Chemistry department hosted the 14th Annual Undergraduate and Graduate Chemistry Research Symposium for the Northern New York Section of the American Chemical Society. Over 80 students and faculty from six local universities came to present their research and to network and build connections between our different institutions.

    World Languages Students Inducted into Honor Societies

    The Department of World Languages, Cultures, and Media held its annual Honorary Inductions and is pleased to congratulate all the students on their achievements!

    This Week in Athletics!

    Men’s lacrosse qualified for the NCAA tournament via an at-large bid after completing their season as Liberty League semifinalists. The Saints had their best start in program history at 11-0 and finished the season 14-2 with a share of the regular season title with a 6-1 league record. They will make their way back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2022 and the third time since 2017, and are headed to Wesleyan to face Plymouth State on Saturday. 

    For men’s lacrosse major awards, Judge Murphy '24 was named the Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year, while Daniel Mahoney '27 was named the Rookie of the Year. 7 Saints earned All-League accolades and head coach Mike Mahoney '93 earned Coach of the Year honors.

    Women’s lacrosse defender Haley Sundstrom '25 earned Second-Team All-Liberty League honors, while midfielder Neve Ley '25 earned Honorable Mention accolades for the women's lacrosse team, as announced by the league office on Tuesday morning.

    After earning their 14th straight Intercollegic Horse Shows Competition (IHSA) Regional title, the riding team advanced to nationals as a team this past week, finishing fourth overall. After earning Reserve Champion honors at Zones, the Saints competed against the 16 best programs, representing the 353 competing schools.

    In the men’s outdoor track and field season, Zach Jaworski '25, Nick Lyndaker '26 and Patrick Russell '26 had all-conference performances at the outdoor track and field championships this past weekend. St. Lawrence finished fifth overall. The Saints now head to regionals with many athletes qualified.

    Women’s track and field saw Emma Palumbo '25 and Alli Sibold '24 earn all-Liberty League honors at the outdoor track and field championship, with Alli getting an honorable mention in the 1500 meter race and Emma taking second-team honors in the 3000 meter steeplechase. The Saints will also head to regionals beginning next week.

    Faculty and Staff Honored, Awarded Promotions at Annual Convocation Ceremony

    To mark the beginning of a new academic year and celebrate the contributions of all members of the St. Lawrence community, the University honored several employees with awards for their outstanding service and recognized a number of faculty who earned tenure and promotions during their annual Convocation event. The ceremony was held outside in the Herring-Cole Grove on Wednesday, August 25.

    St. Lawrence Welcomes Class of 2026

    The Class of 2026 are leaders in and out of the classroom. They’re artists and performers, entrepreneurs, athletes, and advocates. Even before they matriculated on August 21, 2022, they set the bar high for future Laurentians. They came to St. Lawrence with a cumulative four-year GPA of 92.3—a record for an incoming class.

    Financing the Future

    Earlier this year, St. Lawrence University received its largest George I. Alden Trust grant award to create a new, state-of-the-art Bloomberg Finance Lab in Owen D. Young Library (ODY) in support of the new finance major.

    Laurentians Inspire: Alaska Boat Captain Casts a Net on Sustainability

    This summer Jessica Normandeau ’15 set sail on her newest business venture: captain of a 32-foot vessel in Bristol Bay, Alaska. With grueling 18-hour workdays and a lot of creative problem solving, she’s part of a small percentage of women sustainably harvesting fish from the world’s largest, completely wild, sockeye salmon run.

    Here's We Go Saints!

    This past week the women's soccer team secured a 3-0 win against Utica University, while the women's hockey team celebrated a thrilling 2-1 victory over RIT. In the world of esports, St. Lawrence's League of Legends and Super Smash Bros teams showed their digital dominance with 2-0 wins against Howard Community College and Hood College, respectively. The women's swimming and diving team outperformed Clarkson University with a score of 170-103. Meanwhile, the men's soccer team had a resounding 4-0 win against Skidmore College on their home field.

    The Kenya Semester Program is Underway!

    Students in the Kenya Semester Program recently ventured out on the Amboseli component of their experience. For just under a week, they stayed at Sopa Lodge in Amboseli region—a national park spanning 394 square kilometers with a collection of six group ranches—sighting views of Mt. Kilimanjaro across the border in Tanzania. Each day consisted of different experiential learning activities like visiting the local village to interview farmers to roaming Amboseli National Park on safari, and so much more!     Patti Frazer Lock Gives Keynote Address at National Mathematics Meetings

    Professor of Mathematics Patti Frazer Lock recently returned from giving an invited keynote address at the annual AMATYC (American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges) conference in Omaha, Nebraska. The address, on “Updating Recommendations for Introductory Statistics,” was one of the most highly attended at the conference. Lock also gave an invited lightning talk on “Changing GAISE” in the IGNITE session at the conference.

    Weekend Winnings!

    St. Lawrence men’s hockey took home two victories in what was the first weekend sweep of the season, on Friday evening against Dartmouth 3-1, and Saturday night against Harvard 2-0. Graduate student Ben Kraws was named MAC Goaltending Goaltender of the Week in the ECAC, allowing just one goal on 57 shots. Saints women’s hockey came up with a 6-5 win against Dartmouth on Saturday, with Julia Gosling 23 registering her 50th goal as a Saint. Abby Hustler 25 notched a hat trick, earning Saint of the Week honors. Men’s basketball and women’s basketball each went 1-1 on their weekend, with women’s basketball beating RPI and men’s basketball triumphing over Skidmore. First-year forward Elizabeth Flynn 27 registered 31 rebounds, a league high, as she vaulted into first overall in the Liberty Leage in rebounds per game.

    Women’s Tennis: Senior Angelica Aksdal-Jansen reached the ITA Northeast Regional semifinals, one of just four remaining from a 128-player field. She rallied to win the second set but fell 6-3 in the third to NYU’s Victoria Wang.

    Women’s Soccer: Senior Meredith Donahue scored early in Sunday’s match, but the Saints settled for a 1-1 draw at Hamilton. SLU’s record now stands at 4-3-3.

    Men’s Golf: First-year Conlin Bradshaw surged 14 spots on Sunday at the Bowdoin Invitational, finishing T-7th with a 146. He birdied four holes in the final round to cut six strokes off his score.

    Hip-Hop, Urban Cultures, and Democracy: Roundtable Discussion with Docta and Simon, Urban Artists from Senegal

    - Griffiths Arts Center Room 123 Docta and Simon are two well-known artists whose work has been nourished by political and social activism to keep democracy alive in Senegal. These two urban griots (African storytellers) advocate for freedom and democracy by vesting their aesthetics in some of the cultural traditions of their country.

    Weekend of Winning!

    It was a winning weekend for the Saints! Starting on Friday, the Women's Hockey team triumphed over RPI with a 4-1 win, while the Men's Hockey team secured a 5-2 victory against Ferris State University. Saturday the Men's Swimming and Diving team defeated Bard College 57-7, and the Women's team won with a score of 121-49. Women's Hockey continued their winning streak with a 6-1 victory against Union College, and the Volleyball team brought home a 3-1 win against SUNY Potsdam.

    St. Lawrence University has established a new partnership with the Peace Corps centered on an undergraduate certificate program that will combine targeted coursework with hands-on experiences and build the competencies needed for students to be strong Peace Corps volunteers or other intercultural fieldworkers.

    Visiting Assistant Professor’s New Book Explores Medieval Meanings of Water

    Three 2021 graduates recently won awards from their Senior Year Experience and Honors Thesis research on Northern New York's dairy industry, prison reform, and pastoralism and conservation in Kenya.

    Several teams kicked off their respective seasons this weekend. The men's and women's golf teams hit the links at the St. Lawrence Invitational on the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course while Women's Tennis opened their 2021-22 season at the Mary Hosking Invitational hosted by William Smith. On Saturday, the men's and women's cross country teams emerged victorious in their meets against SUNY Plattsburgh, while Field Hockey defeated SUNY Oneonta, 5- 1. Women's Soccer and Men's Soccer swept the competition in both of their respective games this weekend. Visit SaintsAthletics.com
