Saints Men's Soccer Secure Liberty League Title; Skating Saints Sweep Legends WeekendSaints Men's Soccer are Liberty League Champions once again! The Scarlet and Brown defeated RIT 1-0 in the semifinals on Friday before securing a championship win (3-1) over Skidmore College on Sunday. The team will advance to the NCAA Tournament and details will be announced this week. Saints men's ice hockey swept the competition during Legends Weekend at Appleton with a 3-2 win over RPI on Friday and a 4-2 win over Union on Saturday while women's hockey topped RIT 3-0 on the road. A total of 80 student-athletes earned Liberty League All-Academic honors in recognition of their success in the classroom at St. Lawrence. Scarlet and Brown Athletic Rundown!Saint's Softball started their year in Florida, finishing with an above .500 record after nine games played in the Sunshine State. They took wins over Washington & Jefferson, Nazareth, Lawrence, Wellesley and Keuka, winning three straight games to finish the trip. Their best performers swept the Liberty League awards, with Meredith Rose '24 winning player of the week, Layne Fritz '26 being named pitcher of the week, and Allison Kloft '27 tabbed as rookie of the week. Baseball also won four games in Florida to start their season, winning two each against Worcester State and Knox College. Kristina Bahl '24 scored at 10:25 of overtime to lift the women's hockey team to a historic 1-0 win over Penn State in the NCAA Regional Semifinals on Thursday night in Madison, Wisconsin. The win marked the first tournament win for the Scarlet and Brown since 2007, and the first tournament win for head coach Chris Wells. The Saints then had their season end in the NCAA quarterfinal at the hands of Wisconsin. Men’s hockey entered their ECAC quarterfinal series as the road team against Colgate, and dispatched them in two straight games to advance to the ECAC semifinal in Lake Placid, New York this weekend. Luc Salem '24 had the game-winner in a 3-2 double overtime marathon in game one, Jan Olenginski '27 scored the series-clinching goal and Ben Kraws M'25 made 41 saves in a 3-2 game two win. St. Lawrence faced Quinnipiac in the ECAC semifinal and took home the win where they moved on to play in the ECAC championship on Saturday, March 23 where they were defeated by Cornell. No. 4 nationally ranked men’s lacrosse has established itself as one of the strongest teams in the NCAA after two straight wins over other nationally-ranked opponents. They downed No. 11 York 9-8 with a highlight-reel overtime goal from Ben Hutchinson '24, and No. 5 Christopher Newport 13-12 in another overtime thriller. Battle for the ECAC Championship Title!The Skating Saints began an exhilarating journey by fiercely defending their home ice against Yale University in the opening round. In the quarterfinals, the Scarlet and Brown showcased their dominance, sweeping the rink in a best-of-three series against Colgate University. The first game unfolded in a nail-biting fashion, with a thrilling 3-2 victory after two rounds of overtime. The second game saw the Saints secure a clean 3-2 win by the end of the third period. Advancing to the semifinals, the Saints shut out the reigning national champions, Quinnipiac University! Following the gritty playoff run, The Skating Saints took on Cornell to battle for the ECAC championship title. The saints fell just short with Cornell taking the Whitelaw Cup in a 1-3 loss for the Saints. As the Lake Placid Rink resonated with Scarlet and Brown, the St. Lawrence Community witnessed a series of unforgettable matchups, etching memories that will endure for a lifetime! This Month in Athletics!Twelve Laurentians entered the St. Lawrence Athletics Hall of Fame Friday evening at the 2024 Robert J. Sheldon Induction Ceremony. Congratulations to inductees Manny Brito ’97, Andre White ’97, Greg Sutton ’99, Ali Montacer ’01, Jamal Ballantyne ’02, Ryan Carruth ’02, James Brush ’77, Danielle Giannone ’96, Rachel Barrie McKay ’03, Eric Jones ’10, Wendy Pavlus ’11, and Scott Woodburn. St. Lawrence Athletics and Recreation also announced the retirement of Senior Associate Vice President for Athletics Bob Durocher. A member of the athletics department for 35 years, the Canton, New York native has left an indelible mark on the department. He joined as assistant men's and women's soccer coach in 1989 and head men's coach in 1990 before becoming an assistant athletic director in 2000. He was then selected to lead athletics in 2015, and has served in the role ever since. The highlights of his tenure as head of the athletic department include two phases of renovation at Appleton Arena. The first phase included a multi-million dollar renovation of the arena, with the completely donor-funded project resulting in totally renovated player lounges and locker rooms, as well as an updated ice rink and production facilities. Durocher will remain in the position until a successor is selected. A nationwide search will begin immediately. Seven members of the men's lacrosse team earned United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America honors, as announced by the association on Thursday morning. Judge Murphy '24 and Tripp Clark '24 garnered First-Team honors, while Paddy Condon '25 earned Second-Team honors and Caleb Torres '25 earned Third-Team honors. Ben Hutchinson '24, Bobby Wells '25 and Michael Marinello '25 were all selected as Honorable Mention All-Americans. Saints rowing teams received some accolades from the Liberty League following their season’s culmination. Sophomore Angie Vertullo '26 was awarded First-Team All-Liberty League accolades, while senior Sasha Henderson '24 earned Second-Team honors for the women's rowing team, as announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon. Seniors John Norrgard '24 and Jack Whamond '24 earned First-Team All-Liberty League honors for men’s rowing, while Robert Fusting '24 and Annabella Kennedy '24 earned Second-Team All-Liberty League honors. Saints tennis programs also saw multiple athletes honored at the conference level. On the men’s side, senior Adam Heilbronner '24 was named a Second Team singles selection, and earned Second Team doubles honors alongside Broderick Pinto '25. Sophomore standouts Angelica Aksdal-Jansen '26 and Molly Jespersen '26 were each honored as All-Liberty League selections for women’s tennis |
