Here We Go, Saints Challenge Success

Thanks to the generosity of the Laurentian community,  Saints Athletics more than doubled its goal of 1,000 donors and together with the Laurentian community, raised over $550,000 in support of St. Lawrence student-athletes. 

Top Flights for the Saints, Fall Sports Continue

Saints men's and women's tennis teams dominated the competition this weekend. The tandem of Catherine Gamble '23 and Molly Jespersen '23 won the flight A Championship over Union at the St. Lawrence Invitational while Edvin Strandberg '25 came away with the B flight, and Broderick Pinto '25 won the C flight over Union to lead the men's tennis team at the Dutchmen Invitational. The wins continued with Saints women's rowing opening its season with a first-place win over Mount Holyoke while first-year Matthew Serrano won the Kangaroo Invitational 8k to lead the men's cross country team to the title. The field hockey team secured 1-0 home opener win over Oswego while the volleyball team defeated Medaille College 3-2 after beating Utica 3-2.  For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Saints Skate to Victory; Seasons Continue

The Scarlet and Brown dominated the competition on Friday as men's hockey defeated Princeton 6-2 in Appleton Arena and women's hockey secured a 7-3 win over Dartmouth on the road. The weekend wins for the Saints continued with men's basketball securing a 69-65 overtime win over Ithaca on Saturday after defeating RPI 56-53 on Friday while men's squash beat MIT 5-4. Men's tennis defeated Daemen University 7-2 at home as the Saints men's track and field DMR team took first place at the Fastrack Invitational. Saints Shatter Records and Celebrate Seniors

• Men’s Track and Field: Junior Nick Lyndaker shattered the program record in the mile run at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Friday, posting a time of 4:03.36. His performance also set a new Liberty League record. Lyndaker now ranks third in NCAA Division III this season and 10th in Division III history in the event.
• Men’s Basketball: The Saints swept the weekend with back-to-back victories, including a Senior Day win. On Friday, they defeated second-place Ithaca 68-61, with four players scoring in double figures. On Saturday, the team honored six seniors in a pre-game ceremony before dominating Union 74-50. The Saints head into next weekend’s road matchups with their playoff fate on the line.
• Women’s Basketball: Junior Jackie Malley sealed a thrilling 59-56 victory over Union on Senior Day, sinking a game-winning and-one layup with one second remaining. Seniors Caelan McHarney and Nicole Jeffrey were recognized in a pre-game ceremony.
• Women’s Tennis: The Saints opened their 2025 schedule in dominant fashion, earning back-to-back sweeps on Saturday against Saint Michael’s and SUNY Oneonta.
• Men’s Hockey: The Skating Saints rallied in the final minute of regulation to force overtime, where senior Greg Lapointe netted the game-winner in a 3-2 victory over Dartmouth on Saturday. Sophomore Gunnar Thoreson, Lapointe, and sophomore Jan Olenginski each tallied a goal in the win.
• Women’s Hockey: Six different Saints found the back of the net in a commanding road win over Harvard on Saturday. The No. 7-ranked Saints conclude the regular season with this victory and now turn their focus to the ECAC Hockey Playoffs as the third seed, securing a first-round bye.
• Nordic Skiing: On Day 2 of the Middlebury Carnival, senior Emma Strack earned her third top-five finish of the season. She placed fifth in the women’s 10K classic, finishing in 29:21.9.
• Alpine Skiing: The men’s team recorded its second top-five result of the season on Day 2 of the Middlebury Carnival. Senior Kobe Villeneuve led the Saints with a seventh-place finish, while sophomore Charlie Welch and first-year Kaiden Villeneuve achieved career-best finishes, placing ninth and 17th, respectively.

Saints Accelerate–Alumni Return to Campus to Mentor Students

Last week, sophomores and juniors connected with our nationally recognized alumni network members during Saints Accelerate, an interactive career development program designed to help students build confidence, strengthen networking skills, and explore career paths. Students gained new insights, valuable connections, and a stronger sense of direction for the future while building networking confidence and exploring possible career paths. On February 11, President Morris informed the Laurentian community about the passing of Professor Emerita of Sociology Patrice Elaine Patterson LeClerc. Patrice was a beloved faculty member from 1995 until her retirement in 2013, during which time she enriched the academic community at St. Lawrence through her teaching, research, and dedication to her students. Weekend of Winning!

This week, the Saints women’s hockey team started off strong with a 2-1 win over the University of  Ottawa on Tuesday. The Scarlet and Brown later won 5-1 against Mercyhurst in the first of two games over the weekend. Their second match turned into a close game as the Saints were down by three points with only 1 minute and 17 seconds left in the game. Women's hockey scored three goals to tie the game and ultimately won in overtime, 6-5. The men's golf team also prevailed this weekend with a first-place win at the Oswego State Invitational. Sophomore Jimmy King ’26 took home the Liberty League Athletics Performer of the Week award.

Research Topics That Fascinated Our Summer Fellows

This summer, our research fellows asked a lot of questions. Like, “What can glacial striations in the North Country tell us about climate change?” Or, “How do you build an enigma machine?” While searching for answers and testing solutions alongside their faculty mentors, they gained hands-on experience and sharpened their skills as scientists and mathematicians. On Thursday September 28, President Morris sent a message to the community sharing that Pamela Shea died on September 5 at the age of 58. Dedicating 28 years as a building supervisor at St. Lawrence, she took the time to know students through her work. Read the Message.

President Morris sent a message to students on Wednesday, Oct. 13, condemning sexual misconduct, encouraging participation in Purple Week, sharing resources for support, and information about upcoming Advocates Aware Training. Read the message.

When Sophie Margola '21 opens the front doors to the Elsa Gunnison Appleton Riding Hall, she is welcomed by the smell of hay, fresh shavings, and arena footing–inspiring a unique nickname and some of her fondest memories. 

CIIS Launches Travel Grant Map

The Center for International and Intercultural Studies (CIIS) partnered with the Digital Scholarship team to  create an interactive map that features personal essays written by travel grant recipients. Users can select countries around the globe to read about St. Lawrence students' funded research experiences.

Volleyball Player Hits Career Milestone; Field Hockey Coach Fran Grembowicz Celebrates 200th Career Win

Last week, Natalie Piper '22 recorded her 1,000th kill for Saints Volleyball as the team beat SUNY Potsdam 3-0 at home. Piper is the quickest to 1,000 in the program's 41-year history. The week's wins continued with Saints Esports securing their second straight win in the ECAC season against Nazareth College 2-0 and defeating New England College 3-0. On Thursday, the volleyball team defeated SUNY Plattsburgh 3-1 on the road.
On Friday, the field hockey team toppled William Smith 2 -1, earning Head Coach Fran Grembowicz her 200th career win, while both the women's and men's soccer teams defeated Bard College 2-1.  On Saturday, Volleyball defeated Hamilton College 3-1 while the Esports team beat Long Island University 2-1. On Sunday, the field hockey team secured a 2-1 win over the University of Rochester at home.

Laying the Groundwork for Plastic Degradation Research 

Rae Dunbar '23, a combined environmental studies and biology major, wanted answers to the global problem of plastic pollution. After receiving a stipend to spend eight weeks on campus this past summer as a University Fellow,  she laid that groundwork for future researchers interested in plastic degradation. 

Saints Hit a Winning Streak and Secure First Place Victories

Field Hockey—Junior Caroline Hamilton scored two goals, including a dramatic go-ahead goal in the dying seconds of the game, and senior Cara Vredenburg made 16 saves as field hockey earned a conference victory in the Liberty League opener, 2-1 over Skidmore. The win is St. Lawrence’s third straight victory.

Men’s Rowing—The 2024-25 fall portion of the schedule opened at the Mohawk Fall Classic Regatta in Scotia, N.Y. on Sunday. With five boats in the men's 2V race, St. Lawrence's 'B' boat with first-year Luke Rucolas and senior Sam Sternhagen placed first with a time of 15:00.62.

Women’s Rowing—The 2024-25 fall portion of the schedule opened at the Mohawk Fall Classic Regatta in Scotia, N.Y. on Sunday. The Saints 'A' Varsity 8 rowed to a first-place finish, recording a time of 15:29. 67.

Women’s Hockey—Three different Saints scored, including a first-career goal for first-year Alexia Côté, as eighth-ranked women's hockey opened the 2024-25 season with a 3-0 win over Merrimack in a Friday morning game at Lawler Rink. St. Lawrence moved to 1-0-0 on the season, while Merrimack fell to 0-1-0. Côté took ECAC Hockey Bitcoin Rookie of the Week honors for the performance. 

Men’s Tennis—Senior Edvin Strandberg was the lone Saint to represent men’s tennis at the ITA Northeast Regionals on the campus of Drew University, and advanced to the Round of 16 yesterday with a pair of wins. This morning, Strandberg went to a tiebreak in the opening game losing 6-7 (3) and fell 0-6 in the final game to end his run. The team will be back in action in February.

Math and Everything at St. Lawrence

Last Friday’s Math and Everything event brought together 250 young women from North Country high schools, along with students, faculty, and alumni, for a day of learning and exploration. From career panels to interactive sessions on AI, neuroscience, and more, there was so much to explore. Saints Baseball Sweeps Competition, Saints Spring Sports Continue

Saints baseball swung into the spring season with a sweep–defeating Old Westbury 1-0 and 13-9 during the Russmatt Invitational in Florida. The wins for the Scarlet and Brown continued with Saints men's lacrosse dominating Bates 16-7 and the University of Lynchburg 14-5 at the Mustang Classic in Maryland, as the women's team secured a 14-11 win over University of Rochester at home. Saints esports shut out Bellarmine University 2-0 after defeating Brewton-Parker College 2-0 and Marist College 4-2  last week.  Skating Saints defenseman Luc Salem '24 was named a Second-Team All-ECAC Hockey selection and Abhisheka David '26 and Nick Lynadker '26 were named 2022-23 Liberty League rookies of the year in women's squash and men's indoor track and field. Saints Dominate in Florida; Conclude Winter Seasons

Several Saints are dominating the competition in on-the-road matchups in Florida. Women’s tennis defeated Coe College 6-3 as softball beat Macalester 1-0 and New Paltz 8-3, and baseball swept Colby-Sawyer 2-1 and 8-3. Women’s lacrosse is on a winning streak after defeating Oswego 18-7 at home and Saint Michael’s 13-6 on the road while men’s lacrosse dominated SUNY Geneseo 20-6 and Nazareth 16-7. Timmy Boyce ’25 set a programmatic indoor record in the 800m at the NCAA DIII Track and Field Championships and the Women’s Hockey Commissioners Association announced that Lucy Morgan ’23 is a finalist for the Women’s Hockey Goalie of the Year Award. The Liberty League named squash players Lewis Anderson '25 Performer of the Year and Anannya Morey '25 Co-Rookie of the Year while tapping several squash players for the All-Liberty League Team and naming Scott Denne and Jamie Oakley Coaching Staff of the Year. The Skating Saints concluded its season after falling to Quinnipiac in the ECAC Quarterfinals while Alpine skiing’s Ava Mattson ’22 and Nordic skiing’s Brian Beyerbach '23 and Emma Strack '25 wrapped up their seasons at the NCAA Championships in Utah. Peterson '24, Team USA Win Gold in Mixed Relay Race

Sydney Peterson '24 and Team U.S.A. won its first-ever mixed relay gold medal to close out the cross-country competition at the Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. This is the third Paralympic medal for Sydney, who claimed bronze in women's free technique standing and silver in women's long-distance classical technique during her Paralympic Winter Games debut. Saints Open the Season Sensationally

Football: Senior quarterback Will Lederman was named MVP after leading the Saints to a season-opening 19–3 win over Norwich Friday night, securing the Hoffman Cup for the fifth straight year. Lederman threw for 144 yards on nine completions, including a 41-yard pass and a touchdown. He also rushed for 16 yards and added a second touchdown on the ground.

Women’s Tennis: Senior Molly Jespersen won the A draw flight championship as the women’s tennis team wrapped up the Union Invitational with third-flight victories. Jespersen also claimed her second A draw win in doubles, teaming with senior Angelica Aksdal-Jensen for back-to-back 8–3 wins in the semifinal and final. Jespersen was named Liberty League Singles Performer of the Week and, alongside Aksdal-Jensen, Doubles Team of the Week.

Field Hockey: Senior Mayson Blondek scored twice, and first-year goalie Petra Gamage made seven saves to help secure a team shutout with senior Elizabeth Walsh as the Saints earned their second consecutive 5–0 win Saturday at Moravian. St. Lawrence now holds a 3–0 record and has yet to concede a goal in 2025.

Women’s Soccer: Juniors Barrett Freeman and Kiki D’Anza each scored, while junior Chloe Bourque added two assists to lead the Saints to a 2–1 victory over Nazareth on Saturday at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

Men’s Hockey: Greg Gardner joined the men’s hockey coaching staff as Assistant Coach ahead of the program’s centennial season. Gardner brings over 20 years of collegiate and professional experience, known for developing elite goaltenders and contributing to championship-level teams. He arrives from Mercyhurst University, where he served as Associate Head Coach from 2014 to 2025.

Men’s Golf: Senior Jimmy King cut four strokes off his round one score to lead the Saints to a second-place finish at the St. Lawrence Fall Invite at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course. King shot two over par for the weekend, climbing four spots in round two to finish third overall with a 146.

Women’s Golf: Sophomore Sadie Cumming tied for third after round one with a 77, birdieing holes nine and 18. She followed with an 80 in round two to hold her position and finish the St. Lawrence Fall Invite with a 157 at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course.
