    Class of 2020 Celebrated at Commencement

    ​​​​​​​It was 442 days in the making, but members of St. Lawrence University’s Class of 2020 were finally able to come back together for the first time since March 2020 for their long-awaited commencement ceremony. ​​​​​​​More than 350 graduates returned to campus for the ceremony held on Sunday, August 1, in Newell Field House, with nearly 1,000 people in attendance.

    One Year Later: St. Lawrence’s Class of 2020

    Aspiring doctors, Appalachian naturalists, impassioned advocates, and more. Members of St. Lawrence’s Class of 2020 entered a rapidly-shifting world after graduating during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020. One year later, they have returned after meeting the challenge with great resilience, compassion, and determination.

    The Thelomathesian Society is donating $1 million to create an endowed fund aimed at increasing the availability of student mental health care on the St. Lawrence University campus. It is an unprecedented gift, forged in part by two years of pandemic hardship.

    Laurentians representing their 15th, 25th, 35th, 50th, 55th, 60th, 65th, 70th, and 75th reunion milestones, along with the Class of 2021, recently returned to campus for a weekend filled with old friendships and new memories. While we can’t put the weekend on rewind, revisiting the friends, laughter, and memories might be the next best thing.     Welcome, St. Lawrence Class of 2027!

    St. Lawrence’s newest Laurentians should already feel immensely proud of themselves. From their high school achievements in the classroom and community, the members of the Class of 2027 bring passion and curiosity to their next great adventure in the North Country and enter St. Lawrence with the highest-ever cumulative GPA of 93. Forty-three percent graduated at the top of their class. They celebrated their Matriculation on Sunday, August 20, and are now poised to make their mark on St. Lawrence.

    St. Lawrence University was named to The Princeton Review’s “Best 389 Colleges” list for 2024. Based solely on results from student surveys, the popular rankings publication once again recognized several exemplary aspects of co-curricular and academic life on campus.

    On Monday August 28, President Morris sent a message to the community sharing that Piskor Professor Emeritus of Sociology Stuart Lee Hills GP’16 died on August 2 at the age of 90. For more than two decades at St. Lawrence, he served as a devoted teacher and mentor, and was a prolific researcher in his discipline. Read the Message.

    St. Lawrence University’s Alumni Executive Council has announced that Dr. William A. Van Wie '67, Barbarajean "BJ" Schaefer Blodgett '72, Jeffrey P. Spafford '88, and Dr. Wambui Mutoru '06 will receive Alumni Citations for their dedication and service to the Laurentian Community, while Dr. Edward “Ted” F. Higgins '71 will receive the Sol Feinstone Award for Humanitarian Service.

This collection of artwork focuses on self-discovery and self-reflection and that was created at the edge of the precipice before true adulthood and a transitory state that can be simultaneously confusing, frightening, and exciting.

    - Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall This concert, previously scheduled for April 2020, will present music in the popular and classical realms inspired by the events of World War II. University Chorus, directed by Barry Torres and accompanied by Gerri McGrath, will explore a small sampling of this eclectic body of music.

    Rural Feminism Exhibit

    - Traditional Arts in Upstate New York Center St. Lawrence students will present their year-long public history project exploring feminism in the North Country during the 1970s and 1980s as part of a photo-narrative exhibit at the Traditional Arts in Upstate New York Center.

    Saints Secure First Place Finishes; Spring Sports Continue

    The Saints track and field teams secured several first-place wins at the Cortland Classic over the weekend. Lambert ’22 won the decathlon while Mike Skutt ’24 won the 10k to lead the men’s track and field team and Oliva Watson ’23 won the 5k while Olivia Bernier ’24 won the 10k to lead the women’s team. The wins continued with Saints Softball defeating RIT 6-4 on the road after dominating SUNY Potsdam 10-2 and 7-3 while baseball secured a 13-6 win over Clarkson in a Route 11matchup. Men’s lacrosse defeated RPI 11-7 after beating Clarkson 17-6 while women’s lacrosse dominated Vassar 16-8 after topping Clarkson 18-16. Saints Football’s Kyle Frimel ’22 was selected as a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete and several members of the football team were named to the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, recognizing student-athlete academic excellence. The men’s and women’s rowing and golf teams are gearing up to compete in the Liberty League Championships this weekend. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

    Scarlet, Brown, and Green for Sustainability

    Last weekend St. Lawrence hosted the North Country Sustainability Day and Green Living Fair in collaboration with The Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley, Paul Smith’s College, Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County, the municipalities of Canton and Potsdam, and the Local Living Venture. The event, which aimed to inspire and empower attendees to fostering a culture of sustainability across the North Country and beyond, combined gallery exhibits with discussions and welcomed author of  the book"Braiding Sweetgrass" Robin Wall-Kimmerer as the keynote speaker.  View photos from the event on the St. Lawrence Instagram account

    President Morris, New York Six Presidents Pen Joint Letter in Support of Increased Pell Grant Funding

    St. Lawrence University President Kathryn A. Morris joined together with the presidents of the New York Six Liberal Arts Consortium member institutions to send a joint letter to the United States Congress members representing their districts, asking them to support doubling the Pell Grant for qualified students.

    Professor Publishes Book on Religion and Politics

    Assistant Professor of Religious Studies Damon Berry has published a new book, “Christianity and the Alt-Right: Exploring the Relationship.” The book’s publisher, Routledge, describes it as “a must-read for those interested in religion in America, religion and politics, evangelicalism, and religion and race.”

    Associate Professor of Government Ronnie Olesker has published a new book that explores Israel’s standing in the international community titled, “Israel’s Securitization Dilemma: BDS and the Battle for the Legitimacy of the Jewish State.”

    Convocation 2021
    Wednesday, August 25; 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. at Gunnison Memorial Chapel

    President Morris and Dean Schonberg will introduce our new faculty and staff colleagues, recognize newly tenured and promoted faculty colleagues, and recognize faculty colleagues newly appointed to endowed professorships. The Keene, Maslow, Taylor, and Coakley awards will also be presented.

    In-person attendees must be masked per the University's current masking policy. Those not in attendance may watch the program via the livestream.

    Honor Society Induction Ceremony Celebrates First-Generation Scholars

    Forty-six students, 16 faculty and staff, and two alumni became members of Alpha Alpha Alpha (Tri-Alpha), the national honor society recognizing first-generation students for academic excellence, at an April 28 induction ceremony. St. Lawrence established the Eta Nu chapter of Tri-Alpha this year to strengthen its commitment to improving experiences and advancing outcomes of first-generation college students.

    For nearly a decade, Nature Up North has connected people to the environment through citizen scientist projects and outdoor adventures.     On April 19, the Art & Art History Honorary Society welcomed new honorees for the 2022-23 school year. The formal induction ceremony was held on Friday, April 28 just prior to the Senior Art Show at the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery.

    Five students in L.M. & G.L. Flint Professor of Fine Arts Melissa Schulenberg's Advanced Printmaking class were invited to participate in printing large woodblock prints with Big Ink at SUNY Potsdam.

    On Friday, April 28, St. Lawrence University's Alpha Kappa Delta honor society inducted seventeen new lifetime members.

    Scarlet, Brown, and Liberty League Champions!

    What a weekend to be a Saint! On Friday, the ninth-ranked men's rowing team's Varsity 8 claimed the 2023 Liberty League title for the first time since the program began in 1999. On Saturday, the team went on to earn their second title at the New York State Championships and remain undefeated. The title wins for the Scarlet and Brown didn't stop there. Saints women's track and field's Haylei Coolican '23 and Alli Sibold '24 became Liberty League champs as Coolican won the 3,000-meter and Sibold won the 1,500 meters. Saints baseball secured 9-2 and 7-6 wins over Union in the Liberty League Crossover series and men's lacrosse is headed to the Liberty League Semi-finals after defeating Clarkson 10-9 last week. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

    Folk Fest 2023

    This year’s annual Folk Fest featured live music, lawn games, and local vendors. St. Lawrence University’s Environmental Action Organization continued the Earth Day celebrations with a full day of activities for Earth Fest rangin from a campus clean-up and raffles to a DIY potted plants event and so much more.
