An Evening With Adia Victoria
St. Lawrence University and the Ken Okoth '01 Black American Music Project will welcome Adia Victoria to campus for an evening concert on Friday, September 26, at 7 p.m. in the Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall.
The event is free, open to the public, and will be livestreamed.
Adia Victoria is a singer, composer, and poet based in Nashville. Her music has been described as "gothic blues," incorporating elements of rock, blues, punk rock, and country music. The performance, titled “Skip James is My Analysis: An Evening On The Abyss,” will feature a set of six songs interspersed with a candid conversation about mental health and the blues.
Victoria will be joined on stage by her guitar-playing musical partner Mason Hickman.
While at St. Lawrence, Victoria will visit with students in classes about the history of pop-music industries as well as about music and race.
The residency is supported by the Ken Okoth '01 Black American Music Project, which brings to campus a series of visual displays, lectures, seminars, and live performances that explore the history and origins of Black music and the influence of Black American musical traditions on the world. Generously funded by an anonymous donor, the Project honors the legacy of Ken Okoth '01, a beloved friend of many Laurentians whose love of music was exemplified in his performances with the Laurentian Singers and the Singing Saints.
