The ability to attend, or devote our focus, to an intellectual or creative task is a prerequisite for the kinds of work we ask from students across all of our classes. Yet these skills are under siege from the distractions of modern life and from those who profit from our distraction. They are skills that need to be explicitly taught rather than assumed.
In Spring 2026, a group of St. Lawrence faculty and staff came together in The Attention Project to explore ways of teaching these skills. In this session, we will share some of the ideas and lessons learned from that work and discuss how best to help students build the essential skills of deep focus.
