In honor of the diversity of films from around the world and in homage to the indispensable Cinema 10 series of Potsdam, the Department of World Languages, Cultures & Media, and the Language Resource Center are pleased to present:
Dying (Sterben) (2024)
The Lunies family has not been a family for a long time. Elderly couple Lissy and Gerd live alone in a small North German town, both ravaged by age and illness, while their two adult children are too consumed by their own crises to help. Son Tom, a Berlin conductor, is preparing to perform an orchestral piece titled “Dying” composed by his chronically depressed best friend. Daughter Ellen, a dental hygienist in Hamburg, is drowning in alcohol and a self-destructive love affair.
Matthias Glasner’s semi-autobiographical epic, winner of the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival and Best Picture at the German Film Awards, is a three-hour black comedy of family dysfunction that, despite its title, is ultimately all about living.
