Movie

In honor of the diversity of films from around the world and in homage to the indispensable Cinema 10 series of Potsdam, the Department of World Languages, Cultures & Media, and the Language Resource Center are pleased to present:

Goodbye Julia (2023)

Just before South Sudan’s 2011 independence, Mona, a northern Sudanese retired singer in a tense marriage, is wracked by guilt after her involvement in the death of a southern Sudanese man. Unable to confess, she tries to make amends by hiring the man’s oblivious widow, Julia, as her housekeeper. As the two women’s lives intertwine, and as Sudan’s mounting political turmoil threatens to invade their home, Mona is ultimately forced to confront her sins.

Mohamed Kordofani’s debut feature (the first Sudanese film to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Freedom Prize) is a powerful and compassionate drama about guilt, atonement, and the deep divisions of race, religion, and class that tore a nation apart.
