Volleyball Sweeps the Competition at Home; Fall Sports Continue
Last week, Saints volleyball secured several 3-0 wins in their at-home matchups against Saint Michael's College, Vassar College, and Bard College. The wins continued with Esports defeating St. Joseph's College 2-0 and Providence College 3-0, while the field hockey team secured a 2-0 non-conference win over SUNY Oswego, and the men's soccer team defeated Clarkson 3-0.  On Friday, Men's Hockey won their season-opener 2-1 on the road against Colorado College while the Saints men's and women's golf teams wrapped up the fall portion of their schedule at the Nazareth Fall Invitational.

Saints Earn All-Region Accolades

• Football: Senior captain and tight-end Oskar Baldwin earned Division 3, Third-Team All-Region honors for Region II. Baldwin, who also earned First-Team All-Liberty League accolades, played in all nine games for the Saints this season and led the team in receptions with 40 catches for 491 yards, averaging 47.89 yards per game.
• Men’s Soccer: Seniors George Charalambous and Max Mogul, along with sophomore Henry Brown, earned All-Region III Second Team honors for their play this season. Brown, who was named the Liberty League Player of the Year, and earned First Team All-League, emerged as the league's top player this season.
• Women’s Soccer: Senior captain defender Mia Cence earned All-Region III Third Team honors for her play this season. Cence is the first Saint to be named All-Region since Julia Mulhern '20 and Hannah Arment '20, who earned First Team nods in 2019. Cence, who was a Second Team All-Liberty League selection, played in 15 games this past season and started in 14 of them. The defender was a difference maker on the backline helping the team to a 1.18 team goals against average and five clean sheets.

On December 4, President Morris sent a message to the St. Lawrence Community about the passing of Carolyn "Carrie" Johns, professor emerita of environmental studies. Carrie was a beloved member of the faculty, whose dedication to teaching, research, and the environment left an indelible mark on the St. Lawrence community. Saints Earn ECAC Accolades and Net Wins

Women’s Hockey: Senior captain Abby Hustler was named the ECAC Hockey Forward of the Week, presented by Bluebird Hotels, the league office announced Tuesday morning. Hustler notched a goal and three assists, as the team recorded a sweep over Harvard and Dartmouth at Appleton Arena over the weekend. Hustler leads the Saints with six goals and 16 assists for 22 points this season. Hustler's 22 points ties for eighth in the ECAC. 

Men’s Hockey: Sophomore Mason Kucenski was named MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week for the third time this season, as announced by the ECAC league office on Monday morning. Kucenski started both games this past weekend for the Saints going 1-0-1 and playing 125 minutes between the pipes. The netminder stopped 29 shots in the Scarlet and Brown's 3-2 win over No. 13/14 Dartmouth on Friday and made 26 in a shutout against Harvard on Saturday to complete his weekend. 

Men’s Squash: First-year Grégory Malsang took Rookie of the Week honors at the conference level after earning his first career win this past Sunday against the University of Rochester. At number two, Malsang faced Rochester’s Omar Zakaria and, following a nail-biting 11-9 win, Malsang won the second game 11-2 to take a commanding lead. The newcomer closed the set with an 11-6 result to pick up the victory. 

Track and Field: Both men’s and women’s track and field had first place finishes on home turf this weekend. They competed in the Saints Holiday Relays and finished at the top of the team score table in the competition that featured six other schools. First-years Isla Bougard Duncan and Erik Marelli each set personal records as they opened their collegiate careers on a high note–and Marelli won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.98. Sophomore Quinn Sirgany also took first place in the women’s mile run.

Saints Skate to Victory, Fall Sports Continue 

The Scarlet and Brown skated to victory during Laurentian Weekend. Men's hockey defeated Merrimack 3-1 in their home opener on Friday while the women's team secured a 5-3 win over Syracuse at home on Saturday after defeating the Orange 2-0 on the road last week. On Sunday, Sam Lyman '25 shot par to lead the men's golf team at the Nazareth Fall Invitational while Mary Grace McCann '25 sits in first place after the first round. Round two for the pair of Saints continues today. Laurentian Weekend 2022

There was so much Scarlet and Brown spirit on campus for Laurentian Weekend, even the campus foliage showed up for the occasion! From larger-than-life art and gallery exhibitions, to farm tours, poster presentations, pizza rolls, concerts, and plenty of opportunities to cheer on the Saints, it was a weekend-long celebration as parents, alumni, family, and friends returned home to the North Country.  View photos from Laurentian Weekend on the St. Lawrence Facebook page. 

Tis' The Season of Softball, Baseball, Golf, and Lacrosse!

Jimmy King '26 was named the Individual Champion at the Liberty League Championships, leading Saints men’s golf to a second-place finish at the par-72 Shenendoah Golf Club at Turning Stone on Sunday. There was a playoff to determine the individual champion and Jimmy won on the second playoff hole. Jimmy finished with par on the first hole. Jimmy's opponent hit an errant drive on the second hole, leaving Jimmy with the win and a par.

Judge Murphy '24 tallied six goals and an assist for seven points to lead the third-ranked Saints men's lacrosse team to a 15-10 upset win over fourth-ranked RPI on Saturday afternoon in Troy, New York. With the win, the Saints clinched the second seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament and earned regular season co-championship honors, with three teams finishing league play at 6-1. Second to Judge, Daniel Mahoney '27 recorded four goals and two ground balls, while Ted Wilson '26 scored twice.

Two goals each from Liz Evans '24 and Jessica LaPlaca '27 were unfortunately not enough, as the seventh-seeded Saints women's lacrosse team fell 19-6 in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament to William Smith Tuesday.

Both Saints baseball and softball wrapped up their regular seasons with two wins over the weekend. Baseball took two of three games against Clarkson, while softball swept Skidmore. Softball heads to RPI this weekend, hoping to lock down a playoff spot, while baseball engages Clarkson once more in the end-of-season series.

Festival of Science, Scholarship, and Creativity! ❤️🤎

On Friday, we forego regularly scheduled classes to celebrate our students’ academic accomplishments during the Festival of Science, Scholarship, and Creativity. This year, we learned how stress affects metamorphosis in frogs, how students think about sustainability on campus, how retinol has changed our relationship with aging, and how math can help us make better decisions in games like Monopoly or Dungeons and Dragons (among many other fascinating topics). During our annual Dance Showcase, we watch 16 students perform contemporary, jazz, Irish step, and classical pointe numbers. In the Brush Art Gallery, our gallery exhibition focused on “what we hold.” The 12 senior artists featured used a variety of mediums to consider the things in their lives that are hard to let go of—for better or worse.

Weekend Wins for the Scarlet and Brown

It was a great weekend to be a Saint! The football team brought the Hoffman Cup back to Canton after securing a 30-19 win over Norwich on Saturday while men's soccer defeated Hartwick 3-2 after tying its program record with a 9-0 win over SUNY Canton last week. Women's soccer topped Farmingdale 1-0 to remain undefeated while Jackson Hamilton '23 won the Hamilton Short Course Invitational as Saints men's cross country secured the team title and Alli Sibold '24 won the 4k race to take the women's team to a victory. The men's tennis team wrapped up the St. Lawrence Fall Classic with sophomores Broderick Pinto, John Hill-Edgar, and Edvin Strandberg securing individual victories. De-Stress with Pets

St. Lawrence students started off their weekend with furry friends! Every Friday afternoon the Office of Wellness Education hosts ‘Pet De-Stress,’ an event gathering a group of friendly dogs or cats to campus, eager to meet students and give them plenty of love. On Friday, Sept. 2, President Morris sent a message to the community sharing news of the passing of devoted Laurentian, Richard “Dick” Hewitt, an avid outdoorsman who worked in Facilities Operations at St. Lawrence. Read the message.

Saints Fall Sports in Full Swing

The fall sports season is well underway as Saints women's soccer shut out the competition this weekend with a 1-0 win over Colby-Sawyer and a 7-0 win over SUNY Potsdam. The wins for the Scarlet and Brown continued as Emma Palumbo '25 and Timmy Boyce '25 each won the Cardinal Classic 5K during the men's and women's cross country meet in Plattsburgh, and Jimmy King '26 claimed the individual title for Saints men's golf while the 'A' team secured a win to open the season. First-year Molly Jespersen secured the 'B' Flight Singles title during the opening weekend for the women's tennis team while Jenny L'Hommedieu 23 scored her first goal of the season to lead the field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Oneonta. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Building Connections at the Club & Organization Fair

More than 95 student clubs and organizations recently came together for the Club and Organization Fair. Whether they're looking for a place to harmonize with other vocalists, toss a disc with Ultimate enthusiasts, or influence change as a campus leader, this on-campus event is a place for students to share their passions, hobbies, and budding interests. Here's We Go Saints!

This past week the women's soccer team secured a 3-0 win against Utica University, while the women's hockey team celebrated a thrilling 2-1 victory over RIT. In the world of esports, St. Lawrence's League of Legends and Super Smash Bros teams showed their digital dominance with 2-0 wins against Howard Community College and Hood College, respectively. The women's swimming and diving team outperformed Clarkson University with a score of 170-103. Meanwhile, the men's soccer team had a resounding 4-0 win against Skidmore College on their home field.

The Kenya Semester Program is Underway!

Students in the Kenya Semester Program recently ventured out on the Amboseli component of their experience. For just under a week, they stayed at Sopa Lodge in Amboseli region—a national park spanning 394 square kilometers with a collection of six group ranches—sighting views of Mt. Kilimanjaro across the border in Tanzania. Each day consisted of different experiential learning activities like visiting the local village to interview farmers to roaming Amboseli National Park on safari, and so much more! This Week's Scarlet and Brown Recap!

The riding team had a strong performance when it mattered the most. The team took home two wins over the weekend, claiming their 14^th straight Region 2 Championship. Harper Eskey '26 was named High Point Rider collecting a total of three blue ribbons. 

Aidan Baracao '26 delivered a clutch win in singles to lift the men's tennis team to a victory over Skidmore 5-4 – their first win over the Thoroughbreds since 2009-10. It gave the Scarlet and Brown a 2-1 record for the season. 

Men's basketball won the Liberty League semifinal Friday 63-48 over RPI to qualify for a second straight conference championship, before falling to Hobart in the final. Despite this, Trey Syroka '24 was named Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year and to the All-Liberty League Second Team. Adam Dudzinski '27 was named to the All-Liberty League First Team.

It was a strong start to the year for No. 15 nationally ranked men's lacrosse, who improved to 3-0 by opening their home schedule with two wins, one over SUNY Potsdam 18-5 on Thursday, and a 15-8 win against Western New England on Sunday. Judge Murphy '24 and Paddy Condon '25 both received weekly conference awards for their efforts.

Men's hockey skated to a win and a tie over the weekend, first beating Colgate with a thrilling three-goal third-period comeback to take a 4-3 overtime win. Then Cornell came back on the Saints the next night, ultimately leading to a 2-2 tie and a shootout loss. 

Alli Sibold '26 broke a facility record at the "Liberty League Championship" Sunday at the event hosted by St. Lawrence University. Alli ranked with a time of 4:55.07, then also registered a new personal best in the 800m and was named Co-Outstanding Track Athlete and Liberty League Co-Performer of the Week.

Leaving a Lasting Mark on St. Lawrence University

In honor of Black History Month, we’re recognizing Black Laurentians throughout our history who have made a difference and left their mark on our community.

As a student, Steve Peraza ’06 says he sometimes felt like the “lone pepper in a sea of salt.” It’s no surprise that the story of St. Lawrence’s first Black graduate resonated with him. Rev. Jeffrey Worthington Campbell graduated in 1933 and was the first Black Laurentian to be ordained as a Universalist minister by the St. Lawrence School of Theology in 1935. Thanks to Peraza, his legacy and impact is still alive today.

From Victory to Victory

The Saints had an impressive week in sports, beginning with the women's soccer team winning 3-1 against Plattsburgh College and the men's soccer team securing a 1-0 victory over Clarkson University. At Appleton Arena, the women's hockey team dominated with a 7-2 win against Providence College on Friday and a 2-0 victory on Saturday. Meanwhile, both the men's hockey and men's soccer teams faced Rochester Institute of Technology, resulting in the men's hockey winning 4-3 and men's soccer securing a 1-0 victory.

Celebrating An Elaine White-Out

Sunday evening we celebrated an “Elaine White-out” in honor of the longest-tenured staff member in our 167-year history. Elaine White is in her 60th year working at St. Lawrence, and the executive secretary for Student Life remains a dynamic resource for our students while building meaningful friendships across the North Country.
