This Week in Athletics!

Emma-Sofie Nordström '26 made 72 saves over two games and the women's hockey team qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) semifinals with a 2-0 series victory over Yale University this past weekend. The Saints will play in the semifinal for the first time since  COVID-19 shortened 2021 playoffs, when they beat Clarkson University in overtime. They'll have a chance for a repeat performance as they play the Golden Knights at Colgate Friday evening with a berth in the ECAC Championship on the line. 

Nick Lyndaker '26 achieved the long-sought goal of breaking the St. Lawrence program record in the mile run during his trot at the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) indoor championships in Rochester, New York. Lyndaker's time of 4:11.99 edged the Saints' previous program record of 4:12.02 in the mile, which was set by Erik Donohoe in 2008. His time was the fastest in the event out of any competitor from the Liberty League, and gave him a second place overall finish at regionals.

Both tennis teams recorded victories over Ithaca College on the weekend, with the men earning a 6-3 win and the women's team downing the Bombers 7-2. The men's team had two wins at the number one and three spots, while Ariane '27 and Yvette Karera '27 went unbeaten on the day to lead the women's team to victory.

After a season of program record and historic personal-bests, Alli Sibold '24 will have another chance to take the track for the women's track and field team at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) indoor championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia, beginning Friday morning. She enters the event as the second-highest seed in the mile, and the fourth-highest in the 3000m. 

Elizabeth Flynn '27 was named Liberty League Rookie of the Year last Tuesday.  The freshman forward from Brentwood, Tennessee led the Liberty League in rebounds per game with 12.3 and was the only player in the conference to average a double double. Additionally, her 14 double doubles ranked tied for 26th across DIII, and her 12.4 boards per game were the 13th-highest in the NCAA.

27 St. Lawrence winter sport student-athletes earned Liberty League All-Academic honors in their respective sports, as announced by the Liberty League Commissioner Tracy King last week. In total, 383 winter sport student-athletes have qualified for the league's All-Academic teams. To be recognized as a member of the All-Academic team a student-athlete must be a sophomore or higher in class standing with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30. Groundbreaking DEI Efforts!

Margaret Kent Bass is one of three honorees included in the interactive exhibition, “Portraying St. Lawrence,” at our Richard F. Brush Art Gallery. The exhibition draws attention to how portraits act as a form of public memory for an institution or community, and how we can expand both who we remember and how we remember those important to our community.  

Bass is recognized for the indelible mark she left on St. Lawrence through her groundbreaking DEI efforts. Bass joined the University as director of multicultural affairs in 1993 and became a member of the English department in 2000. She was appointed associate dean for faculty in 2004 and interim VP and dean of students in 2005-06. Bass received the Owen D. Young Outstanding Faculty Award and the Emily Eaton Hepburn Award for Creative Leadership.

Nadirah Croft, a 2021 St. Lawrence University Higher Educational Opportunity Program graduate, is the artist behind Margaret Bass’s portrait.

Here We Go, Saints Challenge Success

Thanks to the generosity of the Laurentian community,  Saints Athletics more than doubled its goal of 1,000 donors and together with the Laurentian community, raised over $550,000 in support of St. Lawrence student-athletes. 

Top Flights for the Saints, Fall Sports Continue

Saints men's and women's tennis teams dominated the competition this weekend. The tandem of Catherine Gamble '23 and Molly Jespersen '23 won the flight A Championship over Union at the St. Lawrence Invitational while Edvin Strandberg '25 came away with the B flight, and Broderick Pinto '25 won the C flight over Union to lead the men's tennis team at the Dutchmen Invitational. The wins continued with Saints women's rowing opening its season with a first-place win over Mount Holyoke while first-year Matthew Serrano won the Kangaroo Invitational 8k to lead the men's cross country team to the title. The field hockey team secured 1-0 home opener win over Oswego while the volleyball team defeated Medaille College 3-2 after beating Utica 3-2.  For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Fall Semester in Full Swing

Wins Across The Board!

On the slopes, it was a monumental day for Emma Strack '25 and the Saints Nordic ski program, as she podiumed in the women’s 20-kilometer classic. The third-place finish is the first for the Saints since 2010, as Strack skied the course with with a final time of 1:03:54.2, finishing only 37.6 seconds behind first-place.

St. Lawrence hockey teams went 4-0 on the weekend, with both men's and women's teams scoring victories over Yale and Brown respectively. Abby Hustler '25 had two goals and four assists for the women’s team, earning ECAC Forward of the Week honors. Justin Paul '24 was the top scorer for the Men in a series of wins which included balanced scoring across the lineup.

Men’s and women’s basketball both had successful weekends, with the Saints women splitting with William Smith and RIT. Elizabeth Flynn '27, a first-year from Brentwood, Tennessee, had a career high in points and two double-doubles. The men saw two victories vaulting themselves into first place in the Liberty League standings. Adam Dudzinski '27 was the Liberty League performer of the week.

Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Service

The theme ‘Give Hope A Chance’ echoed through soulful songs and readings during an uplifting evening in Gunnison Memorial Chapel where our community gathered for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. service led by Rev. Dr. Shaun Whitehead. Together, we honored and celebrated Dr. King’s legacy with performances by the St. Lawrence Choral Society, Community Gospel Choir & Gospel Band, Laurentian Singers, Singing Saints, Singing Sinners, and The Upbeats. Unitedly, we reflect on Dr. King’s words that inspire us to pursue a community rooted in love.

Scarlet and Brown Triumph

Starting off strong this week the men's golf team took the win with Cooper Evans placing first place at the Clarkson Invitational, his second career title from the Golden Knights. Saints football followed suit with a 14-7 home victory against Norwich University. In women’s soccer, Lilly Stone ’26 and Zoe Rogan ’27 tallied first career goals, defeating Castleton University and closing the Manchester Cup with a 3-0 win.

Congratulations, Nathan Turtledove ’23!

During this US Open season, we’d like to congratulate our very own tennis champ Nathan Turtledove ’23, who was presented with the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s prestigious 2023 Ann Lebedeff Leadership Award as endowed by Billie Jean King at a banquet in New York City on Aug. 26. Saints Secure Overtime Wins, Fall Season Continues 

•  Football—Junior Clayton Fogler landed a 38-yard field goal on the final play of overtime to power football to a 27-24 win over Union Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium. The win marks the first win over Union since 2016 and the first overtime win for the Saints since 2007.
• Women’s Golf—Senior Mary Grace McCann claimed the individual win to lead women's golf at the Union Fall Invitational at the Mohawk Golf Course in Schenectady. McCann shot an 80 to tie for second place with Union after round one on Saturday. She then shot a 78 on Sunday to finish the weekend with a 158 to claim the individual title and first-place finish.
• Field Hockey—Junior Caroline Hamilton had the game-winning goal in the final minute of double overtime to cap off field hockey’s 3-2 comeback win over Vassar Saturday. St. Lawrence has now won four straight games and is on top of the Liberty League standings.
• Men’s Soccer—Senior George Charalambous earned his fifth consecutive clean sheet, making nine saves as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw. The netminder's work between the posts, along with strong defensive tactics from the Saints, has led to the Scarlet and Brown not conceding since their 1-1 draw against SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, September 7.
• Men’s Hockey—The Saints went 2-0 on the weekend, earning victories over RIT and Canisius. Senior Greg Lapointe’s OT winner lifted the Skating Saints past the Tigers 3-2 on Saturday. Sunday’s game provided some adversity for St. Lawrence, as they went down 2-0 to the Golden Griffins in the opening period. The Saints then scored five unanswered goals, including four in the second period, leading to a 5-2 win and a perfect 2-0-0 weekend. Sophomore men’s hockey goaltender Mason Kucenski was named MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week and first-year Isaac Tremblay was named the Bitcoin Rookie of the Week, as announced by the ECAC office on Tuesday morning. Kucenski earned the weekly award after going 2-0-0 on the weekend picking up his first two career collegiate wins against RIT and Canisius. Tremblay picked up his first career point with an assist on St. Lawrence's first goal against Canisius, then tallied his first career goal in the second period to tie up the game and help spark the Saints' five unanswered goals en route to the victory.

Peak Weekend 2024

One weekend, 46 peaks, and countless adventures! For over 40 years, St. Lawrence students of all hiking abilities have taken on the Adirondack High Peaks for Peak Weekend with the Outing Club. This tradition unites generations of Laurentians, which was especially true this year when a group of current students ran into three alums of the first-ever Peak Weekend on the trail during their annual reunion hike in the ADKs (photos three and four). Academic Affairs and Student Life sent a campus health message to the community on Friday, Dec. 10, sharing a campus health update on recent test results and clinic information. Read the message. 

Prepare for the Unexpected: Stormy Skies, Claustrophobia, and the Art of Pinhole Cameras

Using cardboard boxes, tape, and aluminum foil, students built cameras to create small aperture to allow for exposure of chemically treated paper housed in the chamber of the box. Their unique results included a 32-pinhole lens camera used to make self-portraits; a 360-view multi-lens camera, and a floss container repurposed as a pinhole camera held in the student’s mouth during the exposure.

Saints Basketball Teams Top Clarkson; Winter Sports Return Dec. 29

Women's Basketball ended the semester undefeated after dominating Clarkson, 62-38, to improve to 8-0 on the season, while Men's Basketball improved to 6-1 with a 65-59 win over the Golden Knights. Saints Athletics will continue their winter schedules on Wednesday, December 29, with Men's Hockey facing off against UMass Lowell at Appleton Arena.

Saints XC Qualify for NCAA Championships, Scarlet and Brown Dominate Weekend Matchups

Following stellar seasons, Saints Women's Cross Country earned an at-large bid to the 2022 NCAA DIII Championships and Timothy Boyce '25 and Nick Lyndaker '26 will compete as individuals in the men's championships in Lansing, Michigan on November 19. Saints Swimming and Diving dominated the competition on the road this weekend as the women's team secured a 193-66 victory over Oswego and a 192-74 win over William Smith while the men's team defeated Hobart 126-33. The wins continued with Football topping Buffalo 31-7 and women's basketball defeating Husson 73-63. After defeating Roger Williams 5-4 on a penalty kick and advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament Saint men's soccer concluded its fall season against Amherst on Sunday. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Stress Less Week

Last week Wellness Education sponsored the second annual Stress-Less Week, an initiative started by Active Minds, one of the leading nonprofits dedicated to promoting mental health among young adults. The campus-wide, week-long event included stress management tips, resources, and support through mindful programming: fireside chats with a counselor; managing academic stress with the Academic Advising team; Wellness Zones chair massages with a licensed massage therapist, crafting custom self-care kits; and of course, closing the week with Pet De-Stress. View photos from Stress-Less Week on the St. Lawrence Instagram account. 

“Digital Storytelling for the Environment” Grant Awarded

The Digital Scholarship team at St. Lawrence University has been awarded a $12K grant from the Northern New York Library Network (NNLYN) to leverage digital storytelling tools and techniques to help students and faculty construct powerful environmental narratives with real-world impacts. The grant supports the purchase of professional production equipment intended for outdoor use, such as light-shaping tools, field-recording microphones, and macro lenses, as well as the creation of new training workshops and related web resources on the fundamentals of environmental storytelling. 

• Women’s Hockey—On the heels of two wins over No. 15 Mercyhurst, graduate student Anna Segedi was named the ECAC Hockey Forward of the Week, presented by Bluebird Hotels, while junior goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström was awarded MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week honors. Segedi tallied a goal and an assist, and her goal on Saturday was the game-winner and her 100th career point in Scarlet and Brown. Nordström completed the weekend sweep in goal for the Saints, including a shutout 3-0 win on Friday, as she made 45 saves on the weekend.
• Rowing—A pair of Saints’ first-place finishes highlighted the weekend at the Head of the Geneseo for the men’s and women’s rowing teams, with the men’s Novice 8 cruising to first with a time of 19:47.300. The women's Novice 8 coxed by first-year Eden Keeney took first place, besting St. John Fisher, with a time of 21:48.932.
• Men’s Golf—Senior Ben Scholes shot one under par and claimed the individual title, leading men’s golf to a first-place finish at the Skidmore Fall Invitational at the Saratoga Spa State Park Golf Course this weekend. Scholes shot a 71 at the par-72 course to come away with the individual title.
• Men’s Hockey—Senior captain Mason Waite scored with 12.6 seconds in regulation and senior Tomáš Mazura put on the finishing touches scoring in overtime to lift men’s hockey to a 4-3 win over Niagara on Friday night, leading the Saints to a split of their weekend. They are now 3-1-0 on the season.
• Men’s Soccer—Sophomore Baker Diaz scored his second goal in as many games to send men's soccer to a 1-0 win over RIT Saturday. Diaz earned Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week as a result of his outing. St. Lawrence improved to 5-2-3 overall and 2-0-2 in Liberty League play.
• Men’s Cross Country—First-year Kyle Gaffney was men’s cross country’s Liberty League rookie of the week, after performing as the top-performing first-year for St. Lawrence at their dual meet against Clarkson. Sophomore Henry Hagen took first in the event for the Scarlet and Brown.

Northern Lights Shine on St. Lawrence

The St. Lawrence community recently looked to the sky as an aurora made a vibrant appearance over campus. The colorful display made for another magical night in the North Country. View the photos on the St. Lawrence Instagram account.

The location and times have changed for the University's weekly COVID-19 Testing Clinics. Clinics will now take place Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 9 a.m.-12:15 p.m. in Eben Holden (South Room).

Women’s Cross Country Clinches Liberty League Title

Four Saints finished in the top 10 to lead the women’s cross country team to the Liberty League conference title on Saturday, while the men’s squad finished fourth overall. Women’s Ice Hockey shut out RPI on Friday (3-0) and Union a day later (4-0) to earn two big ECAC Hockey wins as the Saints kicked off conference action. Football celebrated a 34-10 victory over the University of Rochester on Saturday, while the men’s soccer team defeated Hobart in OT to claim the No. 5 seed in Liberty League playoffs. Volleyball went 2-1 last week with wins over SUNY Potsdam and Keuka but falling to SUNY Cortland on Saturday, while the women’s field hockey team defeated St. John Fisher 3-2 on Saturday. The men’s and women’s crew teams both competed at the Head of the Fish Regatta over the weekend.

Make a Difference Day

On Saturday, Oct. 23, more than 400 St. Lawrence students, in collaboration with local organizations such as the Canton Chamber of Commerce, St. Mary’s Church, Coakleys, and Seacomm Federal Credit Union, stepped up for the North Country community by volunteering to help area parks, schools, farms, churches, and homes as part of our Make a Difference Day event.
