Weekend Victories for the Saints

Over the weekend, Skating Saints forward Greg Lapointe '25 scored a hat trick for a four-goal weekend as three other Saints tallied double-digit points during a 5-4 victory over Princeton University. The wins continued with Maggie Wenger winning 100 and 200 freestyles in a loaded Don Richards Swim Invite at RIT.  During the Saints Track and Field Holiday Relays, the women's team won the distance medley relay while the men's team won six events to capture the team title in the season opener. Women's basketball secured a 58-50 victory over Union and  men's basketball defeated Union 74-69 as women's ice hockey skated to a 4-2 victory over Dartmouth. Scarlet and Brown Victories!

The women's volleyball team started the Saints off strong with Araiza Acum-Santos ’27 and Vanessa Latam ’27 scoring career-highs as they claimed a 3-2 win over SUNY Potsdam. Saints field hockey followed with a shutout on the road against Oswego, winning 2-0. Our women’s tennis team swept their final day of the SLU invitational. The team went 8-0 in singles and 5-0 in doubles on Sunday. Men’s soccer brought home the win over SUNY Potsdam thanks to Max Mogul’s ’25 strike giving the Saints a 1-0 victory.

Alejandra ’24 made just about 600 sheets of paper out of recycled scraps, old T-shirts, and plant fibers. Meghan ’25 combed through the St. Lawrence archives to recover and preserve correspondence between Laurentians serving in WWII and Helen Whalen, the registrar at the time. Here We Go Saints 2024

Here We Go Saints 2024 is officially underway now until Wednesday, September 25 at 8 p.m.! Scarlet and Brown Athletic Rundown!

Saint's Softball started their year in Florida, finishing with an above .500 record after nine games played in the Sunshine State. They took wins over Washington & Jefferson, Nazareth, Lawrence, Wellesley and Keuka, winning three straight games to finish the trip. Their best performers swept the Liberty League awards, with Meredith Rose '24 winning player of the week, Layne Fritz '26 being named pitcher of the week, and Allison Kloft '27 tabbed as rookie of the week.

Baseball also won four games in Florida to start their season, winning two each against Worcester State and Knox College. 

Kristina Bahl '24 scored at 10:25 of overtime to lift the women's hockey team to a historic 1-0 win over Penn State in the NCAA Regional Semifinals on Thursday night in Madison, Wisconsin. The win marked the first tournament win for the Scarlet and Brown since 2007, and the first tournament win for head coach Chris Wells. The Saints then had their season end in the NCAA quarterfinal at the hands of Wisconsin. 

Men’s hockey entered their ECAC quarterfinal series as the road team against Colgate, and dispatched them in two straight games to advance to the ECAC semifinal in Lake Placid, New York this weekend. Luc Salem '24 had the game-winner in a 3-2 double overtime marathon in game one, Jan Olenginski '27 scored the series-clinching goal and Ben Kraws M'25 made 41 saves in a 3-2 game two win. St. Lawrence faced Quinnipiac in the ECAC semifinal and took home the win where they moved on to play in the ECAC championship on Saturday, March 23 where they were defeated by Cornell.

No. 4 nationally ranked men’s lacrosse has established itself as one of the strongest teams in the NCAA after two straight wins over other nationally-ranked opponents. They downed No. 11 York 9-8 with a highlight-reel overtime goal from Ben Hutchinson '24, and No. 5 Christopher Newport 13-12 in another overtime thriller.

Battle for the ECAC Championship Title!

The Skating Saints began an exhilarating journey by fiercely defending their home ice against Yale University in the opening round.

In the quarterfinals, the Scarlet and Brown showcased their dominance, sweeping the rink in a best-of-three series against Colgate University. The first game unfolded in a nail-biting fashion, with a thrilling 3-2 victory after two rounds of overtime. The second game saw the Saints secure a clean 3-2 win by the end of the third period.

Advancing to the semifinals, the Saints shut out the reigning national champions, Quinnipiac University!

Following the gritty playoff run, The Skating Saints took on Cornell to battle for the ECAC championship title. The saints fell just short with Cornell taking the Whitelaw Cup in a 1-3 loss for the Saints.

As the Lake Placid Rink resonated with Scarlet and Brown, the St. Lawrence Community witnessed a series of unforgettable matchups, etching memories that will endure for a lifetime! Saints Wrap Up Seasons; Earn Athletic and Academic Accolades

After breaking program records and securing several podium finishes this year, Timothy Boyce '25 and Emma Palumbo '25 capped off their respective rookie seasons by securing 14th and 15th place finishes at the NCAA Track and Field Championship Meet. In recognition of her exemplary leadership on and off the field, Saints Women's Lacrosse Captain and ROTC Commander Abigail Eberle '22 was named a 2022 Yeardley Reynolds Love Unsung Hero Award recipient while Isabel Silvia '22 earned IQCLA Third-Team All-American honors, making her the 17th All-American in the history of the Saints Women's Lacrosse program. Five members of the men's lacrosse team were awarded USILA-Dynamic Division II All-American honors while Nicholas Butler '22 was named to All-Region 3 Third Team, and several Saints were named to the Academic All-District team for their academic and athletics achievements. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

A Conversation with NY Fed President John Williams: An Economic Outlook Presentation and Q & A

20 Years After 9/11: Faculty, Staff, Alumni Event Series Continues
"20 Year-Anniversary in the Global Community," a CIIS World Topic Series, will take place Wednesday, Sept. 8, via Zoom, a Faculty Cafe featuring Professor of Global Studies John Collins' new book, "Globalizing Collateral Language: From 9/11 to Endless War," is happening Friday, Sept. 10, and a Chapel Service on Saturday, Sept. 11. Check out the event details. 

Several teams kicked off their respective seasons this weekend. The men's and women's golf teams hit the links at the St. Lawrence Invitational on the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course while Women's Tennis opened their 2021-22 season at the Mary Hosking Invitational hosted by William Smith. On Saturday, the men's and women's cross country teams emerged victorious in their meets against SUNY Plattsburgh, while Field Hockey defeated SUNY Oneonta, 5- 1. This Month in Athletics!

Twelve Laurentians entered the St. Lawrence Athletics Hall of Fame Friday evening at the 2024 Robert J. Sheldon Induction Ceremony. Congratulations to inductees Manny Brito ’97, Andre White ’97, Greg Sutton ’99, Ali Montacer ’01, Jamal Ballantyne ’02, Ryan Carruth ’02, James Brush ’77, Danielle Giannone ’96, Rachel Barrie McKay ’03, Eric Jones ’10, Wendy Pavlus ’11, and Scott Woodburn. 

St. Lawrence Athletics and Recreation also announced the retirement of Senior Associate Vice President for Athletics Bob Durocher. A member of the athletics department for 35 years, the Canton, New York native has left an indelible mark on the department. He joined as assistant men's and women's soccer coach in 1989 and head men's coach in 1990 before becoming an assistant athletic director in 2000. He was then selected to lead athletics in 2015, and has served in the role ever since. The highlights of his tenure as head of the athletic department include two phases of renovation at Appleton Arena. The first phase included a multi-million dollar renovation of the arena, with the completely donor-funded project resulting in totally renovated player lounges and locker rooms, as well as an updated ice rink and production facilities. Durocher will remain in the position until a successor is selected. A nationwide search will begin immediately. 

Seven members of the men's lacrosse team earned United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America honors, as announced by the association on Thursday morning. Judge Murphy '24 and Tripp Clark '24 garnered First-Team honors, while Paddy Condon '25 earned Second-Team honors and Caleb Torres '25 earned Third-Team honors. Ben Hutchinson '24, Bobby Wells '25 and Michael Marinello '25 were all selected as Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Saints rowing teams received some accolades from the Liberty League following their season’s culmination. Sophomore Angie Vertullo '26 was awarded First-Team All-Liberty League accolades, while senior Sasha Henderson '24 earned Second-Team honors for the women's rowing team, as announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon. Seniors John Norrgard '24 and Jack Whamond '24 earned First-Team All-Liberty League honors for men’s rowing, while Robert Fusting '24 and Annabella Kennedy '24 earned Second-Team All-Liberty League honors.

Saints tennis programs also saw multiple athletes honored at the conference level. On the men’s side, senior Adam Heilbronner '24 was named a Second Team singles selection, and earned Second Team doubles honors alongside Broderick Pinto '25. Sophomore standouts Angelica Aksdal-Jansen '26 and Molly Jespersen '26 were each honored as All-Liberty League selections for women’s tennis

Reunion Weekend 2024: One for the History Books! ❤️🤎

Reunion Weekend 2024 was one for the history books! We celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Kenya Semester Program. We welcomed the "Great 8" back to campus (the classes of 1978 through 1985) for their 40th and 45th Reunion milestones. We sipped Scarlet & Brown Ale and 1856 Lager courtesy of Weird Window Brewing, honored our recent Athletic Hall of Famers, and made new memories with our favorite people in our favorite place.

Saints Fall Sports Continue
Several varsity teams continued their fall seasons this weekend. In their first home game, Football defeated Norwich 37-7 in the Hoffman Cup contest on Saturday at Leckonby Stadium. The weekend wins continued with field hockey defeating Lebanon Valley and Manhattanville at the William Smith Tournament. Volleyball emerged from a 4-0 weekend celebrating wins against SUNY Canton, SUNY Oneonta, SUNY Oswego, and SUNY Plattsburgh at the North Country Classic. Men's Tennis hosted the St. Lawrence University Fall Classic while Women's Golf hit the links at the Hamilton College Invitational on Sunday. Both the men's and women's cross country teams participated in the Hamilton College Short Course Invitational while the men's and women's soccer teams competed against Nazareth College and SUNY Oneonta.

St. Lawrence Athletics shared their commitment to adhering to CDC, St. Lawrence County, NCAA SSI, and St. Lawrence University COVID-19 recommendations and protocols. On Saturday, we honored all Sept. 11 victims and their families, especially Laurentians Robert J. “Bobby” Coll ’88, Catherine Gorayeb ’82, Christopher Morrison ’89, Michel A. “Mike” Pelletier ’88, and Richard H. “Richie” Stewart Jr. ’89. In addition to the hundreds of American flags displayed on the Brush Quad, this year’s campus flag installation also included flags from the more than 90 countries that also lost people 20 years ago. Thank you to the SLU Democrats and International House coordinators for organizing the tribute and to the many students, faculty, and staff who played a role in making it happen again this year. Laurentian Wins!

This past week women’s volleyball earned victories in both Friday contests, with Vivian Zymeck ’23 leading the way offensively to two 3-1 wins over both Bard College and SUNY Canton. Men's soccer beat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in a 1-0 game with Ben Woelfinger ’23 gaining his fifth career shutout. Finally, men's football stunned Castleton during Laurentian Weekend with a 28-0 victory.

Weekend of Winning!

It was a winning weekend for the Saints! Starting on Friday, the Women's Hockey team triumphed over RPI with a 4-1 win, while the Men's Hockey team secured a 5-2 victory against Ferris State University. Saturday the Men's Swimming and Diving team defeated Bard College 57-7, and the Women's team won with a score of 121-49. Women's Hockey continued their winning streak with a 6-1 victory against Union College, and the Volleyball team brought home a 3-1 win against SUNY Potsdam.
