In a collaborative research article recently published in The Adirondack Journal of Environmental Studies, two faculty members and three St. Lawrence alumni explore how carbon emissions and climate change could affect these cold-weather traditions. |

Women's Basketball Continues Unbeaten StreakIn a battle of the last two teams undefeated in Liberty League conference play, Saints Women's Basketball defeated Vassar 99-81 on the road on Saturday to improve to 10-0. Men’s Basketball secured a 68-61win over Bard on Friday after kicking off the new year with a 67-60 victory over Elmira. Men's soccer extended its 11-game unbeaten streak this week, knocking off Liberty League rival Skidmore 2-1. The Saints are now a point away from clinching the league title. Playing in the Ice Breaker Tournament in Lake Placid, women's hockey beat Holy Cross 2-1 before falling to Clarkson, 3-1, in the final. COVID-19 Campus Masking UpdateAcademic Affairs and Student Life sent a message to the community on Monday, Feb. 14 announcing that the University has removed masking requirements for vaccinated students in residence halls effectively immediately. Top Liberty League Times for Men's Track and Field; WInter Sports ContinueDuring the Fasttrack National Invite, Saints men’s track and field’s Timothy Boyce ’25 won the 800 meters, securing the top time in the Liberty League, and one of the top times in the country for a first-year student-athlete, while women’s track and fields’ Alli Sibold ’25, Katherine Sheehy ’23, Emma Palumbo ’25 were the top Division III finishers in their respective events. Over the weekend, women’s basketball defeated RPI 64-59 while women’s ice hockey skated to a 1-1 tie with Brown, and men’s basketball beat Ithaca 80-79 in a close contest. During the Dartmouth College Carnival on Saturday, Tommy Kenosh '23 and Ava Mattsson '22 each won a slalom run for the Saints Alpine ski team, and last week, men’s tennis topped Saint Michael’s College 5-4 at home. Skating Saints Claire Dudley '22 was recently nominated for the 2022 Mandi Schwartz Student-Athlete of the Year award which recognizes leaders on athletic teams, in the classroom, and in the community. Understanding Barriers to Outdoor RecreationStudents in Sociology 101: Principles of Sociology left the traditional classroom behind to try the winter sports they were least familiar with to gain a better understanding of the barriers to outdoor recreation that many face. Under the guidance of Assistant Professor of Sociology Alanna Gillis, and with the support of the Outdoor Program, the hands-on experience of grappling with an unfamiliar activity inspired follow-up conversations and sociological analyses. Saints Secure First Place Finishes; Spring Sports ContinueThe Saints track and field teams secured several first-place wins at the Cortland Classic over the weekend. Lambert ’22 won the decathlon while Mike Skutt ’24 won the 10k to lead the men’s track and field team and Oliva Watson ’23 won the 5k while Olivia Bernier ’24 won the 10k to lead the women’s team. The wins continued with Saints Softball defeating RIT 6-4 on the road after dominating SUNY Potsdam 10-2 and 7-3 while baseball secured a 13-6 win over Clarkson in a Route 11matchup. Men’s lacrosse defeated RPI 11-7 after beating Clarkson 17-6 while women’s lacrosse dominated Vassar 16-8 after topping Clarkson 18-16. Saints Football’s Kyle Frimel ’22 was selected as a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete and several members of the football team were named to the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, recognizing student-athlete academic excellence. Scarlet, Brown, and Green for SustainabilityLast weekend St. Lawrence hosted the North Country Sustainability Day and Green Living Fair in collaboration with The Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley, Paul Smith’s College, Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County, the municipalities of Canton and Potsdam, and the Local Living Venture. The event, which aimed to inspire and empower attendees to fostering a culture of sustainability across the North Country and beyond, combined gallery exhibits with discussions and welcomed author of the book"Braiding Sweetgrass" Robin Wall-Kimmerer as the keynote speaker.
