COVID-19 Update: Campus Operating Status, Campus Arrival, and Spring 2022 Semester

Academic Affairs and Student Life sent a message to the community on Monday, January 10, announcing the campus operating status is now Yellow-A (moderate risk), and sharing updates on campus arrivals, in-person classes, testing plans for the semester, booster shot requirement information, and a reminder of the University’s masking policy. Women's Basketball Continues Unbeaten Streak

In a battle of the last two teams undefeated in Liberty League conference play, Saints Women's Basketball defeated Vassar 99-81 on the road on Saturday to improve to 10-0. Men’s Basketball secured a 68-61win over Bard on Friday after kicking off the new year with a 67-60 victory over Elmira.  Last week, several winter sports schedules were adjusted due to health and COVID-19 safety protocols. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Behind the Scenes with Campus Kitchens 

Several St. Lawrence students devote time and energy to providing food relief through Campus Kitchens. Caitlin French '23 went behind the scenes to show how students collaborate with Dining Services and other local partners to prepare and serve free meals for those who need them most. Men's soccer extended its 11-game unbeaten streak this week, knocking off Liberty League rival Skidmore 2-1. The Saints are now a point away from clinching the league title. Playing in the Ice Breaker Tournament in Lake Placid, women's hockey beat Holy Cross 2-1 before falling to Clarkson, 3-1, in the final. Saints Secure Liberty League Title, Sweep Opponents

• Women's Squash: The Saints secured their fifth Liberty League title on Sunday against Denison, overcoming a 4-2 deficit. Key performances from senior Meg Pruett and first-years Mariam Dodd and Angel Otshabeng propelled the team to their first championship since the 2021-22 season. Otshabeng was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
• Men's Squash: The men's team advanced to the Liberty League title match after defeating Bard 6-1 and sweeping Haverford 9-0 on Saturday. First-year Grégory Malsang earned the Most Outstanding Player award for the championships, marking the second consecutive year a Saint has received this honor.
• Women's Hockey: The Saints achieved a weekend sweep by defeating No. 9 Quinnipiac and, on Senior Day, No. 12 Princeton. These victories secured them a first-round bye and home-ice advantage in the best-of-three quarterfinals beginning February 28. Additionally, ECAC Hockey announced senior Taylor Lum as a nominee for the Mandi Schwartz Student-Athlete of the Year award. Junior Emma-Sofie Nordström was selected as one of nine semifinalists for the Hockey Commissioners Association Goalie of the Year award and is representing Team Denmark at the Olympic qualifiers.
• Women's Basketball: Over the weekend, the women's team went 2-0, edging RIT 55-52 and then delivering an offensive showcase to defeat William Smith 81-59. Sophomore Elizabeth Flynn and junior Caelan McHarney scored in double digits in each game. The Saints have won four of their past five contests.
• Men's Hockey: The Skating Saints secured a 4-4 tie and shootout win over Princeton on Saturday night. Junior Tyler Cristall led with two goals, while first-year Isaac Tremblay and sophomore Jan Olenginski each contributed a goal. Goaltender Dominic Basse clinched the shootout by stopping three of the Tigers' attempts.
• Swimming and Diving: Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams were recognized as CSCAA Scholar All-America Teams for the 2024 fall semester, each achieving a collective GPA over 3.3 to earn this academic distinction.

COVID-19 Campus Masking Update

Academic Affairs and Student Life sent a message to the community on Monday, Feb. 14 announcing that the University has removed masking requirements for vaccinated students in residence halls effectively immediately. The University continues to require masks in all other campus locations, including classrooms and indoor public spaces. Read the Message. 

Leading with Love: Spirituals and Civil Rights Movement Songs

During this virtual program, President Kathryn Morris invites all Laurentians to participate in this week’s “Leading with Love: MLK in Black History Month” virtual events. Her statements in this year’s virtual recorded celebration of  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. are featured alongside spirituals and civil rights songs played on the pipe organ by Musician-in-Residence Sondra Goldsmith Proctor, and commentary from University Chaplain the Rev. Top Liberty League Times for Men's Track and Field; WInter Sports Continue

During the Fasttrack National Invite, Saints men’s track and field’s Timothy Boyce ’25 won the 800 meters, securing the top time in the Liberty League, and one of the top times in the country for a first-year student-athlete, while women’s track and fields’ Alli Sibold ’25, Katherine Sheehy ’23,  Emma Palumbo ’25 were the top Division III finishers in their respective events. Over the weekend, women’s basketball defeated RPI 64-59 while women’s ice hockey skated to a 1-1 tie with Brown, and men’s basketball beat Ithaca 80-79 in a close contest. During the Dartmouth College Carnival on Saturday, Tommy Kenosh '23 and Ava Mattsson '22 each won a slalom run for the Saints Alpine ski team, and last week, men’s tennis topped Saint Michael’s College 5-4 at home. Skating Saints Claire Dudley '22 was recently nominated for the 2022 Mandi Schwartz Student-Athlete of the Year award which recognizes leaders on athletic teams, in the classroom, and in the community. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores. Spectator Policy Update

St. Lawrence Athletics shared their commitment to adhering to CDC, St. Lawrence County, NCAA SSI, and St. Lawrence University COVID-19 recommendations and protocols. Face coverings are required for all spectators at indoor athletic facilities including home Saints athletic events. Read the policy. 

Understanding Barriers to Outdoor Recreation

Students in Sociology 101: Principles of Sociology left the traditional classroom behind to try the winter sports they were least familiar with to gain a better understanding of the barriers to outdoor recreation that many face. Under the guidance of Assistant Professor of Sociology Alanna Gillis, and with the support of the Outdoor Program, the hands-on experience of grappling with an unfamiliar activity inspired follow-up conversations and sociological analyses. View the photo on the St. Lawrence Instagram account. 

Saints Clinch Liberty League Playoffs 

• Men’s Basketball: The Saints secured a Liberty League playoff berth with a Friday night victory over Skidmore. Junior Adam Dudzinski led the team with 18 points, while junior Dan Anderson added 10. St. Lawrence now turns its focus to tonight’s first-round matchup against third-seeded Vassar on the road.
• Women’s Basketball: St. Lawrence closed out the regular season with a commanding 62-40 win over RPI, clinching the fifth seed in the Liberty League playoffs. Junior Jackie Malley drained five three-pointers en route to 17 points, while sophomore Elizabeth Flynn contributed 10 rebounds and nine points. The Saints will travel to RIT on Tuesday night for a win-or-go-home first-round game.
• Women’s Tennis: The Saints extended their winning streak to three with a 5-2 home victory over Rochester on Sunday afternoon. A sweep in doubles play and strong singles performances from junior Molly Jesperson and first-year Eleanor McDermed led the way in a complete team effort.
• Men’s Hockey: Senior captain Mason Waite has been nominated for the 2025 ECAC Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, as announced by the conference on Thursday. The award recognizes the male ECAC student-athlete who best exemplifies leadership, academic excellence, and community involvement. Waite, a three-time ECAC All-Academic Teamselection, is set to earn the honor for a fourth time when the 2025 recipients are announced.

Stewart breaks down the fascinating process of snow crystal formation, from the water vapor in the clouds to the intricate flakes that blanket the ground. Wearing Masks on Campus

On Friday, April 22 Academic Affairs and Student Life sent a message to the community recommending wearing face masks in all public indoor spaces in light of the increase in COVID cases in our region. Read the Message. 

Saints Secure First Place Finishes; Spring Sports Continue

The Saints track and field teams secured several first-place wins at the Cortland Classic over the weekend. Lambert ’22 won the decathlon while Mike Skutt ’24 won the 10k to lead the men’s track and field team and Oliva Watson ’23 won the 5k while Olivia Bernier ’24 won the 10k to lead the women’s team. The wins continued with Saints Softball defeating RIT 6-4 on the road after dominating SUNY Potsdam 10-2 and 7-3 while baseball secured a 13-6 win over Clarkson in a Route 11matchup. Men’s lacrosse defeated RPI 11-7 after beating Clarkson 17-6 while women’s lacrosse dominated Vassar 16-8 after topping Clarkson 18-16. Saints Football’s Kyle Frimel ’22 was selected as a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete and several members of the football team were named to the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, recognizing student-athlete academic excellence. Scarlet, Brown, and Green for Sustainability

Last weekend St. Lawrence hosted the North Country Sustainability Day and Green Living Fair in collaboration with The Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley, Paul Smith’s College, Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County, the municipalities of Canton and Potsdam, and the Local Living Venture. The event, which aimed to inspire and empower attendees to fostering a culture of sustainability across the North Country and beyond, combined gallery exhibits with discussions and welcomed author of  the book"Braiding Sweetgrass" Robin Wall-Kimmerer as the keynote speaker.  View photos from the event on the St. Lawrence Instagram account.
