This Month in Athletics!

Twelve Laurentians entered the St. Lawrence Athletics Hall of Fame Friday evening at the 2024 Robert J. Sheldon Induction Ceremony. Congratulations to inductees Manny Brito ’97, Andre White ’97, Greg Sutton ’99, Ali Montacer ’01, Jamal Ballantyne ’02, Ryan Carruth ’02, James Brush ’77, Danielle Giannone ’96, Rachel Barrie McKay ’03, Eric Jones ’10, Wendy Pavlus ’11, and Scott Woodburn. 

St. Lawrence Athletics and Recreation also announced the retirement of Senior Associate Vice President for Athletics Bob Durocher. A member of the athletics department for 35 years, the Canton, New York native has left an indelible mark on the department. He joined as assistant men's and women's soccer coach in 1989 and head men's coach in 1990 before becoming an assistant athletic director in 2000. He was then selected to lead athletics in 2015, and has served in the role ever since. The highlights of his tenure as head of the athletic department include two phases of renovation at Appleton Arena. The first phase included a multi-million dollar renovation of the arena, with the completely donor-funded project resulting in totally renovated player lounges and locker rooms, as well as an updated ice rink and production facilities. Durocher will remain in the position until a successor is selected. A nationwide search will begin immediately. 

Seven members of the men's lacrosse team earned United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America honors, as announced by the association on Thursday morning. Judge Murphy '24 and Tripp Clark '24 garnered First-Team honors, while Paddy Condon '25 earned Second-Team honors and Caleb Torres '25 earned Third-Team honors. Ben Hutchinson '24, Bobby Wells '25 and Michael Marinello '25 were all selected as Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Saints rowing teams received some accolades from the Liberty League following their season’s culmination. Sophomore Angie Vertullo '26 was awarded First-Team All-Liberty League accolades, while senior Sasha Henderson '24 earned Second-Team honors for the women's rowing team, as announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon. Seniors John Norrgard '24 and Jack Whamond '24 earned First-Team All-Liberty League honors for men’s rowing, while Robert Fusting '24 and Annabella Kennedy '24 earned Second-Team All-Liberty League honors.

Saints tennis programs also saw multiple athletes honored at the conference level. On the men’s side, senior Adam Heilbronner '24 was named a Second Team singles selection, and earned Second Team doubles honors alongside Broderick Pinto '25. Sophomore standouts Angelica Aksdal-Jansen '26 and Molly Jespersen '26 were each honored as All-Liberty League selections for women’s tennis

Reunion Weekend 2024: One for the History Books! ❤️🤎

Reunion Weekend 2024 was one for the history books! We celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Kenya Semester Program. We welcomed the "Great 8" back to campus (the classes of 1978 through 1985) for their 40th and 45th Reunion milestones. We sipped Scarlet & Brown Ale and 1856 Lager courtesy of Weird Window Brewing, honored our recent Athletic Hall of Famers, and made new memories with our favorite people in our favorite place.

Saints Lax Tops Competition, Winter Seasons Wrap

The Scarlet and Brown wrapped up the winter season and are headed into the spring with a bang! On Saturday, Saints Men's lacrosse beat Nazareth 16-11 on North Country Field after dominating SUNY Geneseo 15-6 last week while the women's team topped SUNY Geneseo 14-10 in its season opener. During the NCAA Skiing Championships, Emma Strack posted the best Nordic result for the Saints since 2012. After back-to-back, high-intensity games against Colgate in the ECAC quarterfinals, the Skating Saints concluded its season. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Changing the Narrative

Led by a shared artistic vision, The Black Laurentian Initiative, The Black Student Union, Carefree Black Girls, and La Sociedad came together to create “Changing the Narrative,” a photo collection featuring fellow students embracing their identity and self-perception through creative expression. Saints Baseball Sweeps Competition, Saints Spring Sports Continue

Saints baseball swung into the spring season with a sweep–defeating Old Westbury 1-0 and 13-9 during the Russmatt Invitational in Florida. The wins for the Scarlet and Brown continued with Saints men's lacrosse dominating Bates 16-7 and the University of Lynchburg 14-5 at the Mustang Classic in Maryland, as the women's team secured a 14-11 win over University of Rochester at home. Saints esports shut out Bellarmine University 2-0 after defeating Brewton-Parker College 2-0 and Marist College 4-2  last week.  Skating Saints defenseman Luc Salem '24 was named a Second-Team All-ECAC Hockey selection and Abhisheka David '26 and Nick Lynadker '26 were named 2022-23 Liberty League rookies of the year in women's squash and men's indoor track and field. Student-Athletes Earn Academic Accolades

Over the last month, several athletic teams were recognized for their academic achievements including women's lacrosse, men's hockey, women's hockey, volleyball, men's golf, and women's golf. SLU Wins All Weekend Long

Women’s Track and Field: St. Lawrence opened the Holiday Relays with multiple wins. Junior Carly Zack won the 3000 in 11:03.29, junior Quinn Sirgany took the mile in 5:27.09, junior Charlotte Blake won the 1000 in 3:21.10, and senior Amelia Berthold claimed the 60-meter hurdles in 9.82.

Men’s Track and Field: The Saints posted several victories at the Holiday Relays. Junior Riley Cushman won the 600, first-year Luke Calvin captured the mile, and sophomore Erik Marelli won the 60 hurdles. St. Lawrence swept the relays and added field wins from junior Brendan O’Horo in the pole vault (3.95m) and junior John Mahoney in the long jump at 6.31 meters.

Women’s Basketball: Senior Jackie Malley scored 21 points and senior Hannah Van Dyke grabbed 12 rebounds to spark a fourth-quarter comeback in a five-point win at Rensselaer. The Saints move to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in league play heading into Wednesday’s home game vs. Hamilton.

Swimming and Diving: The men’s team advanced on the scoreboard at the Don Richards Invitational to place fourth, while the women’s team placed fifth overall among a crowded field at the large invite in Rochester, N.Y. First-year Sophie Nelson picked up a win for the Saints, securing victory in the 1650-yard freestyle.

Saints Dance the Night Away💃🏻🕺🏽 

This past weekend, the SLU Dance Ensemble performed their annual show—an expression of bold ideas, creative energy, and the spirit of our campus arts community. After a semester of studying different styles of dance and collaborating on choreography, our performers brought three nights of dynamic storytelling to the Gulick Theatre stage. The President's Office, Academic Affairs, and Student Life sent a message to the community on Friday, Sept. 17, announcing updates to the campus operating status (Orange Phase A) and the Campus Operating Status framework. Read the message. 

Virtual Organ Concert: Music for High Holy Days - Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
Samuel Adler and Herman Berlinski, two Jewish immigrants to the United States, have produced a large body of organ compositions.  Organist Sondra Goldsmith Proctor performs a small portion of their music for the High Holy Days - Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Watch the concert.

Last week, Esports' Overwatch team opened their season against Northeastern College and New Haven University while the field hockey team matched up against Hamilton College. In their Friday night lights game, the football team defeated Morrisville State College 27 - 14. On Saturday, the men’s soccer team secured a 1-0 win against SUNY Potsdam at home, while the women’s soccer team tied against RPI in their Liberty League opener on the road.

The volleyball team defeated Utica College and Elmira College at the Oswego Invitational, while Lillian Sullivan '23 and Catherine Gamble '23 led the women's tennis team with first-round wins in the singles draw on Saturday at the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament at William Smith College. The men's tennis team had two pairs win their semifinal match of the "A" Doubles consolation at the Dutchman Invitational hosted by Union College on Sunday afternoon. Men’s golf competed in the Williams College Fall Invitational, while women’s golf competed in the George Phinney Classic invitational at Middlebury. Visit SaintsAthletics.com for up-to-date news and scores.

Our students’ creativity knows no bounds, which was evident at Friday’s Club and Organization Fair! Whether it’s in long-time campus organizations or brand new clubs just added to the list of 150+ others, students build a community where they explore their passions in each one. Watch a video of the event on Instagram. 

A Week of Winning!

Saints baseball recorded their first sweep of league play over the weekend, downing RIT with three wins, 14-6, 4-1 and 10-9, all in nine-inning contests on Friday and Saturday. Entering the final week and a half of the regular season, the Saints play Clarkson in a three-game series beginning Friday with playoff implications for both teams. The Saints currently occupy the fifth seed in the Liberty Leagues west division, with five teams making the postseason.

Both men’s and women’s tennis teams took victories in their league play over the weekend, with men’s tennis beating Bard 9-0 and went 1-1 overall on the week, also losing to RPI. Women’s tennis also downed Bard 9-0 and engaged in a close match against RPI, narrowly losing 5-4. Yvette Karara '27 was perfect on the weekend, including a 2-0 day in the tight defeat against the Engineers.

Esports season officially came to an end on a 4-1 playoff loss to Kennesaw State. The team enjoyed a successful campaign, finishing second in the Northeast Region and top 14 in the nation within their division of the National Esports Collegiate Conference.

Jimmy King '26 tied for sixth place to lead the St. Lawrence men's golf team at the Farmingdale Spring Invitational over the weekend at the par-70 Bethpage Black Course in Long Island, New York.

The Winston Room was packed on Thursday night for St. Lawrence University Spectrum's Pride Week drag show, featuring the incomparable local traveling trio Sister Slayage. Saints Dominate Weekend Competitions

This weekend, Saints football dominated Castelton 42-6 while women's ice hockey defeated Providence 5-2 on the road. The wins continued with men's soccer securing a 2-1 win over SUNY Cortland while women's soccer topped Union 1-0 and the field hockey team secured a 4-0 win over Utica. Saints volleyball started their Liberty League Campaign with a 3-1 win over Union while Saints men's track and field won their home Ronald C. Hoffmann Invitational. Celebrating United World Colleges Day

Last week members of the St. Lawrence community came together in celebration of United World Colleges (UWC) Day. The annual global event highlights the strength and diversity of the UWC movement and its mission for a more peaceful and sustainable future and coincides with the United Nations’ International Day of Peace. St. Lawrence UWC scholars spent the evening attending events that speak to this year’s theme of “Peace Begins With Us” and reflected on what being effective changemakers looks like. Photo credit: Nancy Glennon ’23.
