    Faculty Focus-February 18, 2025

    Faculty members put their knowledge into action so students and others are able to benefit from it. Recently, faculty published articles in prominent publications, were honored with prestigious scholarly positions, and presented at academic conferences.

    D&I Book Club: Take My Hand by D. Perkins-Valdez

    - Buckley Room (SC 336) As part of Black History Month, the D&I Book Club will read "Take My Hand" by D. Perkins-Valdez.

    Letter-Writing Event: “Dear North Country”

    - Ireland Lounge, Noble Center The Richard F. Brush Art Gallery and the English department are hosting “Dear North Country,” an in-person letter-writing event. The event is part of an international project called "Make Visible"–an ongoing, community-led project developed by New Zealand artist, curator, and activist Shannon Novak.

    Saints Shatter Records and Celebrate Seniors

    • Men’s Track and Field: Junior Nick Lyndaker shattered the program record in the mile run at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Friday, posting a time of 4:03.36. His performance also set a new Liberty League record. Lyndaker now ranks third in NCAA Division III this season and 10th in Division III history in the event.
    • Men’s Basketball: The Saints swept the weekend with back-to-back victories, including a Senior Day win. On Friday, they defeated second-place Ithaca 68-61, with four players scoring in double figures. On Saturday, the team honored six seniors in a pre-game ceremony before dominating Union 74-50. The Saints head into next weekend’s road matchups with their playoff fate on the line.
    • Women’s Basketball: Junior Jackie Malley sealed a thrilling 59-56 victory over Union on Senior Day, sinking a game-winning and-one layup with one second remaining. Seniors Caelan McHarney and Nicole Jeffrey were recognized in a pre-game ceremony.
    • Women’s Tennis: The Saints opened their 2025 schedule in dominant fashion, earning back-to-back sweeps on Saturday against Saint Michael’s and SUNY Oneonta.
    • Men’s Hockey: The Skating Saints rallied in the final minute of regulation to force overtime, where senior Greg Lapointe netted the game-winner in a 3-2 victory over Dartmouth on Saturday. Sophomore Gunnar Thoreson, Lapointe, and sophomore Jan Olenginski each tallied a goal in the win.
    • Women’s Hockey: Six different Saints found the back of the net in a commanding road win over Harvard on Saturday. The No. 7-ranked Saints conclude the regular season with this victory and now turn their focus to the ECAC Hockey Playoffs as the third seed, securing a first-round bye.
    • Nordic Skiing: On Day 2 of the Middlebury Carnival, senior Emma Strack earned her third top-five finish of the season. She placed fifth in the women’s 10K classic, finishing in 29:21.9.
    • Alpine Skiing: The men’s team recorded its second top-five result of the season on Day 2 of the Middlebury Carnival. Senior Kobe Villeneuve led the Saints with a seventh-place finish, while sophomore Charlie Welch and first-year Kaiden Villeneuve achieved career-best finishes, placing ninth and 17th, respectively.

    On February 11, President Morris informed the Laurentian community about the passing of Professor Emerita of Sociology Patrice Elaine Patterson LeClerc. Patrice was a beloved faculty member from 1995 until her retirement in 2013, during which time she enriched the academic community at St. Lawrence through her teaching, research, and dedication to her students.     COVID-19 Booster Clinic 

    In accordance with public health recommendations, a COVID-19 vaccination booster is required for all St. Lawrence University students and employees within 30 days of becoming eligible. A free booster clinic will be offered Thursday, February 24 at the SUNY Canton campus. Register for the booster clinic.

    Online Film Screening: My Buddha is Punk

    - Zoom Directed by Andreas Hartmann, this film follows a young Burmese punk as he travels across the country to promote his philosophy- a symbiosis of Buddhism and punk that rejects religious dictates and political doctrine in the former military dictatorship of Myanmar. This event is had been moved online and is available via Zoom.

    Former Saints Women's Lacrosse and Field Hockey Coach to be Honored with IWLCA Hall of Fame Induction

    Longtime St. Lawrence women's lacrosse and field hockey coach Dotty Hall will be enshrined in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Hall of Fame in November. Hall was one of the most successful coaches in the history of Saints women's athletics with a combined win total of 306 victories in field hockey and lacrosse. Read her story

    Saints Head to Liberty League Championships; Swim Program Records Shattered

    The men’s and women’s track and field teams are headed to the Liberty League Championships after winning the SLU Open against SUNY Plattsburgh, Utica, Vermont, Mohawk Valley, and SUNY Potsdam last weekend. During the Liberty League Championships in Ithaca, the women's swimming and diving team shattered program records in the 800 freestyle relay and 4x400 freestyle as Maggie Wenger '24 set a new 100 freestyle program record. Over the weekend, men’s basketball defeated Union 81-62 to secure a first-round playoff game after topping Skidmore 65-64 and women’s basketball beat Skidmore 76-45 to secure their 20th win of the season. Men’s ice hockey defeated Cornell 2-1 in an overtime contest on Friday while women’s ice hockey skated to a 3-3 tie with Harvard last week and men’s tennis beat SUNY Oneonta 8-1 on Saturday. Men’s squash defeated Middlebury 7-2 in the quarterfinal matchup of the Summers Cup at the CSA Nationals but fell to No. 5 seeded Tufts in the Semifinal matchup.  For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores.  For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores.     Every year, the St. Lawrence community comes together and finds small ways to bring smiles to members of the North Country.     Eduardo Puerta ’22 was awarded a “best speaker” prize for his presentation on his research exploring connections between knot theory and linear algebra at the Mathematics Contest and Competition of Northern New York (MCCNNY) on March 26.

    - Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall The St. Lawrence Writers Series welcomes Robin Hemley, the inaugural Viebranz Visiting Professor of Creative Writing. Registration is required for this in-person event.

    Rhythm and Roots Ensemble Concert

    - Launders Underground St. Lawrence University's Rhythm and Roots Ensemble will present an evening of songs in the style of 1950s Rhythm and Blues. The in-person event is free, open to the public, and available via live streaming.

    Track and Field Teams Secure Ice Broken Open Titles; Spring Sports Continue

    The Saints track and field teams are continuing a winning streak after securing team titles at Ice Broken Open on Saturday. The women's team won 12 events and the men's team won 9 events during the home meet against Castleton, Clarkson, Herkimer, NVU-Johnson, Plattsburgh, and Potsdam. The weekend wins continued with the men’s and women’s tennis teams each dominating Bard 9-0 while men’s lacrosse defeated Ithaca 14-10 and women’s lacrosse beat Bard 20-8. Baseball defeated Ithaca 6-2 after beating SUNY Poly 2-0 last week while Esports advanced to the Elite 8 in the Teemo Cup after securing a 2-0 win over Milligan University. After winning its 11th-straight Regional Championship,  four members of Saints riding will advance to Zones on April 9. Eleven skiers from the Alpine and Nordic ski teams were honored by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association (USCSCA) for having earned National Collegiate All-Academic Ski Team honors for the 2022 season while six members of the men's and women's track and field teams earned all-region honors for the indoor season, as announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

    Three St. Lawrence students designed and implemented humanitarian projects in Ghana, West Africa, and Cairo, Egypt with the support of Davis Projects for Peace, which funds grassroots projects developed by undergraduate students.
